What the SVG format is

SVG, or Scalable Vector Graphics, is an XML-based vector format that describes shapes, paths, text, gradients, and effects. Because the artwork is rendered from these descriptions, it can be enlarged or reduced without the pixelation associated with raster images.

Illustration and design software such as Inkscape, Adobe Illustrator, Affinity Designer, and CorelDRAW creates SVG files. SVG is also used for website logos and icons, diagrams, interface graphics, cutting-machine designs, and exported charts. An SVG can contain linked or embedded raster images, CSS, fonts, scripts, animations, and filters; converters may not reproduce all of these elements identically.

What the PNG format is

PNG is a raster format that stores a fixed grid of pixels using lossless compression. It supports alpha transparency, so transparent areas can remain transparent instead of being filled with a background color. PNG is suitable for logos, icons, screenshots, diagrams, and graphics with sharp text or flat colors.

Web browsers, office applications, image editors, mobile devices, and operating systems widely support PNG. It is preferable to JPEG when transparency or lossless edges are required, but it is often larger than JPEG for photographs and textured images. Unlike SVG, a PNG can become blurred or pixelated when enlarged beyond its exported dimensions.

How to convert an SVG to PNG

2. Upload the .svg file.
3. Select PNG as the output format and start the conversion.
4. Download the .png file, then check its pixel dimensions and transparency in an image viewer.

This browser-based option requires no software installation and is free to use. Do not upload confidential artwork or files containing private embedded data unless the service’s handling and retention terms are suitable.

Using Inkscape

1. Open the SVG in Inkscape.
2. Choose File → Export.
3. In the export panel, choose Page, Drawing, or Selection under the export area.
4. Set the required width and height in pixels, choose a destination filename ending in .png, and click Export.

For repeatable command-line exports, run:

inkscape input.svg --export-type=png --export-filename=output.png

Add --export-width=1600 or --export-height=1200 to set one output dimension while preserving the aspect ratio. Use both only when a specific output rectangle is required. Inkscape uses the SVG page or drawing dimensions when no pixel size is specified. The export area can also be controlled with options such as --export-area-drawing or --export-area=x0:y0:x1:y1.

Quality and compatibility limits

• Choose the final pixel dimensions before exporting. A 200-pixel PNG cannot provide the detail of a 2,000-pixel export merely by being enlarged afterward; export again from the original SVG at the larger size.
• A transparent SVG background normally produces transparent PNG pixels. Set an explicit background color during export if the destination does not support alpha transparency or displays transparent areas incorrectly.
• Text can change appearance when referenced fonts are unavailable on the conversion system. Convert text to paths in the design application when exact lettering matters, but retain the original SVG as the editable master.
• Linked files, external CSS, scripts, animations, blend modes, and advanced filters can be missing or rendered differently. Compare the PNG with the original before distribution.
• PNG contains pixels rather than editable vector objects. Keep the SVG and export separate PNG copies for the required sizes and destinations.
