Free online SVG to GIF converter

A legacy application, documentation system, upload form, or device may accept GIF files but reject SVG artwork. Converting creates a fixed-pixel image for that destination, but removes SVG’s editable vector structure.

What SVG is

SVG (Scalable Vector Graphics) is an XML-based vector image format. It describes paths, shapes, text, gradients, and other graphics as instructions rather than a fixed pixel grid, so it can scale without normal raster-image pixelation.

Web developers, designers, diagramming tools, and applications such as Inkscape and Adobe Illustrator use SVG for icons, logos, charts, and illustrations. An SVG can also reference fonts, CSS, raster images, filters, scripts, and animation; viewer support for those features varies.

What GIF is

GIF (Graphics Interchange Format) is a raster format with a palette of up to 256 colors per frame. Its LZW compression is lossless for the already palette-limited pixel data, but converting a full-color SVG to GIF usually requires color reduction.

GIF is supported by older software, messaging platforms, basic web interfaces, and systems that need simple animated images. It can contain multiple frames and use one palette entry as transparent, but it does not support full alpha transparency; partially transparent edges become either opaque or fully transparent.

Convert the file

Upload the SVG to 101convert.com, select GIF as the output format, set the required pixel width and height when those controls are available, and download the result. The conversion can be performed free in the browser without installing software.

Choose the output size for its final use before converting. A GIF cannot retain SVG scalability, and enlarging it afterward causes pixelation.

For local batch or command-line work, ImageMagick can rasterize a static SVG when it is installed with an SVG renderer such as librsvg:

magick -background none -density 144 input.svg -resize 800x output.gif

-density 144 sets the SVG rendering resolution before resizing; -resize 800x produces an image 800 pixels wide while preserving the aspect ratio. Test the result because SVG filters, fonts, and CSS can render differently between SVG engines.

For visual control, open the SVG in GIMP, select the import dimensions in the SVG render dialog, then use File → Export As and save with a .gif extension. GIMP presents GIF palette and transparency options during export. If an SVG renders incorrectly in GIMP, export a PNG at the needed size from Inkscape using File → Export, then export that PNG as GIF from GIMP.

Quality and compatibility limits

Gradients, photographs, shadows, and anti-aliased edges can show banding or dithering after palette reduction. Dithering can hide some gradient banding but adds speckling and can increase file size. Flat icons and limited-color line art generally convert best.

GIF’s binary transparency can leave jagged edges or halos when placed over a background different from the one used during conversion. Use a matching background where possible. If the receiving system permits it, PNG is usually preferable for static artwork with many colors or semi-transparent edges.

A normal SVG-to-GIF conversion creates one static GIF frame. CSS, SMIL, and JavaScript animation in an SVG are not reliably converted into GIF animation; an animated GIF requires rendering each frame at a chosen frame rate and assembling those raster frames with animation-capable software.

Check the exported GIF at its final display size. Convert text to paths when font availability is uncertain, and embed external images or resources before conversion to avoid missing fonts, images, or styles.
