Some applications, printers, mobile devices, and document systems accept JPEG images but cannot display SVG files. Converting the artwork creates a broadly compatible raster image for sharing, embedding, or use where a fixed pixel format is required.

What the SVG format is

SVG, or Scalable Vector Graphics, is an XML-based format that stores shapes, paths, text, colors, gradients, and effects instead of fixed pixels. Its vector artwork can be enlarged without the pixelation associated with raster images, so designers and developers use SVG for logos, icons, diagrams, maps, illustrations, and web graphics.

Adobe Illustrator, Inkscape, CorelDRAW, Affinity Designer, and Figma can create or export SVG files. An SVG may also contain embedded or externally linked images, custom fonts, filters, animation, and scripts. These elements can render differently between applications; external resources may be unavailable during conversion.

What the JPEG format is

JPEG, also written JPG, is a raster image format that uses lossy compression. It is supported by web browsers, office software, operating systems, photo editors, printers, and cameras.

JPEG is effective for photographs and detailed images with many colors because it produces relatively small files. It does not preserve vector data, transparency, or animation. Converting an SVG to JPEG rasterizes it at a chosen pixel width and height, and repeated JPEG saves can add compression artifacts.

How to convert SVG to JPEG

1. Open the free converter on 101convert.com.
2. Select or upload the .svg file.
3. Choose JPEG or JPG as the output format.
4. Start the conversion and download the resulting .jpg file.

This is suitable when you need a quick conversion and do not need to set raster dimensions, background compositing, or detailed color-management options.

Use GIMP

1. Open GIMP and select File → Open, then choose the SVG file.
2. In the SVG import dialog, set the required pixel width and height. Use the final display or print dimensions rather than relying on the default size.
3. If the SVG has transparent areas, add a background layer and fill it with the required color. JPEG cannot store transparency.
4. Select File → Export As, enter a filename ending in .jpg, and choose Export.
5. Set the JPEG quality and confirm the export. A quality setting around 85–95 is a common compromise, but flat artwork may show artifacts even at high quality.

Use ImageMagick

Install ImageMagick with an SVG rendering delegate such as librsvg, then run:

Replace input.svg and output.jpg with the required filenames. -density 300 sets the rasterization density before the SVG is read; -background white supplies the color used where transparency is removed; and -quality 90 controls JPEG compression. The background options are unnecessary when the SVG is fully opaque. ImageMagick installations can restrict SVG reading through security policies, and conversion fails if the required rendering delegate is missing.

Quality and compatibility limits

• Choose the final pixel dimensions before conversion. A 200-pixel-wide JPEG cannot be enlarged later without losing detail. For print, calculate pixels as the physical size in inches multiplied by the required DPI.
• Transparent SVG regions become a solid color, commonly white, because JPEG has no alpha channel. Set the background deliberately.
• Fonts unavailable on the conversion system can change text spacing and appearance. Install the required fonts or convert text to paths in the design application before exporting.
• Filters, gradients, clipping paths, embedded images, external image links, and color profiles can render differently between applications. Inspect the exported JPEG at its intended display or print size.
• Use PNG when the artwork contains transparency, sharp text, flat-color logos, or line art. JPEG is generally better when a smaller file is more important or the rendered image is photographic.
