Free online HEIC to JPEG converter

Some Windows programs, upload forms, printers, and older devices accept .jpg files but cannot open iPhone photos saved as .heic. Converting a copy to JPEG provides broad compatibility for sharing, printing, and editing.

What HEIC is

HEIC is the common file extension for HEIF (High Efficiency Image File Format) images encoded with HEVC compression. Apple uses HEIC by default on supported iPhones and iPads because it usually stores comparable photographic quality in less space than JPEG.

On an iPhone or iPad, Settings → Camera → Formats → High Efficiency saves new compatible photos as HEIC. A HEIC container can also hold image sequences, depth data, transparency, HDR information, and other data that a standard JPEG cannot retain.

What JPEG is

JPEG, stored as .jpg or .jpeg, is a lossy photographic image format supported by browsers, email clients, office software, printers, photo services, and nearly all operating systems. It is the practical format when a service explicitly requires JPEG.

JPEG compression discards image data each time the image is encoded. JPEG does not support transparency and does not preserve HEIC features such as depth maps, Live Photo motion, image sequences, or most HDR capability.

Convert HEIC files to JPEG

For individual files, upload the HEIC image to the converter on 101convert.com, select JPEG as the output format, start the conversion, and download the resulting .jpg file. Keep the original HEIC file if you need the smallest original file, HDR data, depth data, or later editing flexibility.

On macOS, open the file in Preview and choose File → Export. Select JPEG, set the quality level, choose a destination, and save. For multiple images in Finder, select the files, use Quick Actions → Convert Image, and select JPEG.

On Windows, install HEIF Image Extensions from the Microsoft Store if the file will not open in Photos or File Explorer. Open the photo in Photos and use See more → Save as to save a JPEG when that option is available. The exact menu can vary between Photos versions.

For batch conversion, ImageMagick requires a build with HEIC support through libheif. In a copy of the source folder, run:

magick mogrify -format jpg *.heic

The command writes JPEG files beside the HEIC originals. Test one file first, especially when preserving EXIF metadata, GPS coordinates, or color profiles matters.

Quality and transfer settings

Choose high JPEG quality for printing, cropping, or further editing; use a lower quality setting only when smaller upload or email files are more important than fine detail. JPEG conversion can reduce quality even at high settings, and repeated JPEG edits and saves cause additional loss.

To create JPEG files for future iPhone photos, select Settings → Camera → Formats → Most Compatible; this normally uses more storage. To have iOS convert compatible photos during a cable transfer, select Settings → Photos → Transfer to Mac or PC → Automatic; retain the original HEIC files if their extra data is needed.

Do not rename photo.heic to photo.jpg. Changing a filename extension does not convert the encoded image data, so software may still reject or fail to open the file.
