JPEG is often required by web browsers, email systems, phones, and applications that do not support TIFF. Converting a TIFF also produces a much smaller file for sharing or storage, but lossy compression can remove image detail and metadata.

What the TIF format is

TIF, also written as TIFF, is a raster image format used by scanners, cameras, publishing systems, GIS applications, and document-management software. It can store uncompressed or losslessly compressed pixels, high bit depths, color profiles, transparency, and multiple pages in one file. TIFF is suitable for editing, printing, and archiving because it can preserve more source data than JPEG.

What the JPEG format is

JPEG is a lossy raster format designed mainly for photographs and other continuous-tone images. It is supported by web browsers, phones, operating systems, office applications, and most image editors. JPEG files are usually much smaller than TIFF files, but high compression or repeated saving can produce block artifacts, halos, blurred edges, and color changes. JPEG does not preserve TIFF features such as multiple pages, layers maintained by an editing application, or reliable transparency.

How to convert a TIF file with desktop software

Photoshop: open the TIFF, then choose File → Save a Copy or File → Export → Export As. Select JPEG, set the quality, and save.

macOS Preview: open the TIFF, choose File → Export, select JPEG under Format, adjust the quality slider, and click Save.

How to convert TIF files with ImageMagick

ImageMagick runs on Windows, macOS, and Linux. A basic conversion with a quality setting is:

magick input.tif -quality 90 output.jpg

To convert only the first page of a multipage TIFF, use:

magick input.tif[0] -quality 90 output.jpg

To export every page as a separate JPEG, use a numbered output pattern:

magick input.tif -quality 90 output-%03d.jpg

The ImageMagick -quality value normally ranges from 1 to 100. Values around 85–95 suit many photographs; inspect the result because the best value depends on the image and the required file size.

Quality and compatibility limits

Keep the original TIFF because JPEG conversion is generally irreversible. Use about 90–95 for photographs where detail matters and about 75–85 when reducing file size is more important. Avoid JPEG for line drawings, screenshots, text-heavy scans, logos, and images that will be edited and saved repeatedly; PNG or lossless TIFF usually preserves these better.

JPEG normally stores 8-bit-per-channel data, so converting a 16-bit or higher-bit-depth TIFF reduces tonal precision. A multipage TIFF cannot remain a single multipage JPEG; export each page separately or use PDF when the document must stay multipage. JPEG has no standard alpha transparency, so transparent areas are usually flattened against a background, often white.

Color profiles and some metadata may be changed or discarded during conversion. For accurate printing or color matching, verify the embedded profile and compare the JPEG in the intended application. JPEG can also be unsuitable for CMYK workflows because support for CMYK JPEG varies between programs and devices.
