What the PM6 format is

PM6 generally identifies an Adobe PageMaker 6 document used for brochures, newsletters, flyers, books, advertisements, and other page-layout work. A PM6 file stores text frames, placed graphics, fonts, master pages, guides, and print settings; it is not a single bitmap image. PageMaker users, legacy print shops, publishers, and organizations recovering older archives may still encounter these files.

PageMaker was discontinued, and current applications generally do not open PM6 files directly. The original PageMaker installation is usually the most reliable way to render the layout. Missing fonts, linked graphics, and printer resources can alter line breaks, image placement, or page dimensions.

What the JPEG format is

JPEG is a compressed raster-image format supported by web browsers, phones, image viewers, office software, and most operating systems. Its relatively small files make it practical for previews, email attachments, websites, and image-based records that do not require PageMaker.

JPEG is a final rendered image, not an editable publishing format. A multipage PM6 document normally becomes one JPEG per page, while a selected-page conversion produces only that page. Text becomes pixels, and lossy compression can blur small type or create artifacts around sharp lines. PDF, PNG, or TIFF is usually preferable when selectable text, lossless edges, or professional print output is required.

How to convert PM6 to JPEG

The simplest option is the conversion tool built into 101convert.com, which can process the file without installing PageMaker or another desktop application:

1. Open the PM6 conversion page on 101convert.com.
2. Select or drag the .pm6 file into the upload area.
3. Choose JPEG as the output format and start the conversion.
4. Download the resulting JPEG file or files. Several pages may be returned as separate images.

Inspect every downloaded page for missing fonts, displaced graphics, incorrect cropping, and unreadable small text. Do not upload confidential publishing files unless the service’s current privacy and retention terms are acceptable.

Using PageMaker for greater control

1. Open the file in Adobe PageMaker 6 or another installation that supports the specific document version.
2. Restore the fonts and linked graphics used by the publication, then check page size, bleeds, line breaks, and image placement.
3. Create a PDF if a higher-quality intermediate is needed. Depending on the PageMaker release and installed components, use File → Export → Adobe PDF, or print to a PostScript file and process it with Adobe Acrobat Distiller. Older PageMaker installations may require the correct PostScript printer description and PDF export components.
4. Open the PDF in a desktop PDF application that supports image export, such as Adobe Acrobat, and choose Export a PDF → Image → JPEG.
5. Set the output resolution before exporting. About 150–200 ppi is generally adequate for screen sharing; use at least 300 ppi for ordinary print output, while retaining the original page dimensions.

Exporting through a PDF preserves the rendered page more reliably than trying to recreate the layout in an image editor. It does not preserve editability in the JPEG, and a multipage PDF must be exported as a separate image for each page.

Quality and compatibility limits

• Keep the original PM6 file, its fonts, linked graphics, and any intermediate PDF. JPEG cannot be converted back into an editable PageMaker publication.
• Use the highest practical resolution for small type, fine rules, and detailed illustrations. Repeatedly opening and saving JPEG files causes additional lossy compression.
• PNG or TIFF generally retains cleaner edges than JPEG for line art, diagrams, screenshots, and black-and-white text-heavy pages.
• If a page has incorrect line breaks or missing images, correct the source document and export again; editing the JPEG cannot restore the missing layout data.
