Email systems, websites, image viewers, and devices that cannot open native Sketch documents commonly require JPEG. Converting a .sketch file creates a widely compatible raster copy for sharing or archiving, but removes the editable design structure.

What the SKETCH format is

.sketch is the native document format of Sketch, a macOS design application used for user interfaces, wireframes, icons, prototypes, and vector-based layouts. A document can contain multiple pages, artboards, symbols, reusable components, text layers, vector paths, bitmap images, and prototype links.

Sketch is the primary application for editing these files and preserving their layers. Sketch documents are commonly exchanged in interface-design and design-handoff workflows, but ordinary image viewers cannot display them directly.

What the JPEG format is

JPEG, identified by .jpg or .jpeg, is a compressed raster-image format supported by web browsers, operating systems, phones, office software, and most image editors. It produces relatively small files and is suitable for photographs, previews, and general-purpose sharing.

JPEG compression is lossy: exporting discards image information to reduce file size. JPEG has no transparency channel, so transparent areas in a Sketch design must be rendered against a background color, usually white.

How to convert with Sketch

1. Open the .sketch file in the Sketch app on macOS.
2. Select the required artboard, layer, or slice. Select an entire artboard when the output should contain a complete screen or composition.
3. In the Inspector, use the export controls and click the plus button to add an export setting.
4. Set the format to JPG and choose the scale or output dimensions. Use 1x for the design’s nominal size; use 2x or 3x when a larger raster output is needed.
5. Click Export, select a destination, and save the resulting .jpg file.

To export several artboards, select the required artboards and export them together. Sketch creates separate JPEG files for separate exportable items; it does not automatically combine multiple pages or artboards into one image. To create one composite JPEG, place the required content on a single artboard first.

• Small text, thin strokes, and interface icons can show JPEG blocking or ringing. Export at the final display size or larger, use the highest available quality, and avoid repeatedly resaving the JPEG.
• Transparent backgrounds become opaque. Set the intended background color before export, or use PNG when transparency or sharp interface graphics are required.
• Fonts may render differently if the required fonts are unavailable on the system performing the export. Check text layout and line wrapping in the exported image.
• Color appearance can vary between applications and devices because color profiles may be handled differently. Verify the JPEG in its intended destination.
