Convert SKETCH to SVG

SVG is needed when a Sketch design must be opened in a browser, vector editor, documentation system, or other software that does not support native .sketch documents. Exporting also creates a scalable file for sharing, web delivery, or archiving.

What the SKETCH format is

.sketch is the native document format of Sketch, a macOS interface and product design application from Sketch B.V. Designers use it for screens, icons, wireframes, symbols, components, and design systems. A document can contain editable vector layers, text, bitmap images, styles, shared components, masks, artboards, and prototype data.

A Sketch file is intended to remain editable in Sketch. Other graphics applications may open or import it, but they generally cannot preserve every component, constraint, style, comment, or prototype feature. The format is also a package containing document data and assets, rather than a flat image.

What the SVG format is

SVG, or Scalable Vector Graphics, is an XML-based vector format supported by web browsers and many design, publishing, and development tools. Shapes, paths, and text remain resolution-independent, so the same file can render at different sizes without raster pixelation.

SVG suits logos, icons, interface assets, illustrations, and diagrams. It is often smaller than a raster export for simple artwork, but embedded photographs, complex effects, and large numbers of paths can make an SVG large.

How to convert SKETCH to SVG

Using Sketch on macOS

1. Open the .sketch document in Sketch and save a backup copy.
2. Select the artboard, group, shape, or layer to export. Select multiple artboards when you need separate screen exports.
3. In the Inspector, find Export and choose Make Exportable. Depending on the Sketch version, the same operation may be available through File → Export or the export controls in the toolbar.
4. Choose SVG as the format and leave the scale at 1x unless the destination requires another scale.
5. Click Export, choose a destination, and save the resulting .svg file.

Exporting an artboard creates an SVG for that artboard. Exporting a layer includes that layer and its child layers, but not unrelated objects elsewhere on the canvas. Hide or remove unused layers before exporting to reduce file size and prevent unintended content from being included.

Using an online converter

Online services such as Zamzar and Convertio have offered .sketch-to-.svg conversion, but proprietary-format support can change. Confirm that the service currently lists SKETCH as the input and SVG as the output before uploading.

1. Upload the .sketch file to the converter.
2. Select SVG as the output format and start the conversion.
3. Download the result and inspect it in the intended browser or graphics application.

Use online conversion only for non-confidential files. Unreleased product designs, customer assets, and documents containing sensitive information should stay in Sketch or be processed with trusted local software; review the service's retention and deletion terms before uploading.

Quality and compatibility limits

SVG export preserves vector geometry, but Sketch-specific editing data does not survive as editable Sketch objects. Symbols, shared styles, layout constraints, comments, and prototype links normally become ordinary SVG groups, paths, or attributes, or are omitted.

Text may render differently when the recipient lacks the original fonts. Keep text as text when searchability and text editing matter. Convert text to outlines when preserving exact glyph shapes matters more; outlined text is no longer readily editable or searchable as text.

Gradients, masks, boolean operations, shadows, blend modes, and transparency can render differently in Sketch, browsers, and vector editors. Check the exported file in its final destination, especially when it uses clipping masks or complex effects.

Raster images placed in the document remain raster images after SVG export and cannot gain resolution. Their embedding or linkage depends on the exporter and settings; check the SVG and retain the original image assets when the destination reports missing files. Open the result in a text editor or SVG optimizer only after confirming that its appearance and required editability are intact.
