A PDF is needed when a Sketch design must be sent to someone without Sketch, submitted for printing, added to documentation, or archived as a broadly supported file. It packages selected design content into a single viewable document, while the original .sketch file remains necessary for continued editing.

What the .sketch format is

.sketch is Sketch’s native project format, used primarily on macOS for interface layouts, wireframes, icons, prototypes, and design systems. A document can contain pages, artboards, layers, symbols, shared styles, component overrides, text, and embedded or linked images.

The format is intended for editing in Sketch, not general document viewing. Other applications may open some Sketch files, but they generally cannot reproduce every symbol, library connection, prototype link, override, or interaction. A .sketch file should therefore be retained as the editable source.

What the PDF format is

PDF is a page-based document format that preserves layout, typography, vector paths, images, and many print settings across operating systems. Browsers, Preview, dedicated PDF readers, and office software can open it without Sketch.

PDF is suitable for design reviews, approvals, print output, handoff documentation, and reference copies. It normally does not retain Sketch layers, symbols, constraints, libraries, editable prototypes, or interactive behavior.

Convert using Sketch on macOS

1. Open the .sketch file in Sketch.
2. For a single artboard or layer, select it in the canvas or Layers list. To export several artboards, select the required artboards.
3. In the Inspector, click Make Exportable, add an export setting if necessary, and choose PDF as the format.
4. Click Export and choose a destination and filename such as design-review.pdf.

For a multipage PDF containing artboards, use Sketch’s File → Export → Export Artboards to PDF command when available in your version. Check the selected page and artboards first because the export selection controls which screens appear and, in multipage output, their order. Exporting a layer or individual artboard normally produces content bounded by that selection rather than the entire Sketch document.

Quality and compatibility limits

• Vector paths and selectable text generally remain sharp at any display or print size. A bitmap image cannot gain detail beyond its original resolution.
• Sketch must have access to the required fonts for predictable output. Missing fonts can be substituted before export; embedded-font behavior can also be restricted by font licensing. Open the PDF on another device and check headings, symbols, and small text.
• Prototype links, animations, comments, hover states, hidden layers, and other interactive behavior are not preserved as editable Sketch features in a standard PDF.
• Blur, shadows, transparency, blend modes, masks, and other effects may be rasterized or render differently between Sketch versions and conversion environments. Inspect transparent areas and fine details at 100% scale.
• Layers and design-system relationships are not a substitute for PDF pages. Keep the original .sketch file if later editing, resizing, or component changes are required.
