A website, browser, cutting machine, or vector editor may require SVG instead of Adobe Illustrator’s AI format. SVG is also easier to preview, embed in HTML, and share without Illustrator.

What the AI format is

AI is Adobe Illustrator’s native graphics format, used by illustrators, designers, print shops, and sign or packaging manufacturers. It stores vector paths, shapes, text, layers, artboards, gradients, transparency, effects, and sometimes embedded or linked raster images.

AI files can contain Illustrator-specific features such as live effects, gradient meshes, appearance attributes, clipping structures, variable fonts, and opacity masks. Many AI files include PDF-compatible content, which helps other applications open them, but PDF compatibility does not preserve every Illustrator feature.

What the SVG format is

SVG is an XML-based vector format supported by web browsers, design applications, document software, and many laser, vinyl, and cutting machines. It describes paths, shapes, text, fills, strokes, gradients, masks, and filters rather than storing artwork as a fixed pixel grid.

SVG artwork can scale without the pixelation associated with raster images. It is often smaller than a raster export for logos, icons, diagrams, and simple illustrations. SVG can also be opened as text, embedded in HTML, styled with CSS, and manipulated with JavaScript, although browser and application support for advanced features varies.

How to convert AI to SVG

Using Adobe Illustrator

1. Open the AI file and check every artboard, hidden layer, linked image, missing font, clipping mask, and effect.
2. Choose the Artboard tool and select the artboard to export, or decide whether the complete document and all artboards are required.
3. Choose File → Export → Export As, select SVG (svg), enable Use Artboards when the SVG should follow the artboard boundaries, and click Export.
4. In the SVG Options dialog, use SVG 1.1 when compatibility with older software matters. Choose a higher decimal precision, commonly 3–5 places, for artwork containing detailed curves; lower precision can reduce file size but alter geometry.
5. Use Presentation Attributes for broadly compatible markup, or Style Attributes when the output will be managed with CSS. The exact options depend on the Illustrator version.
6. Choose Convert to Outlines for text that must look the same on systems without the source fonts. Keep text as text only when editability, accessibility, or text search matters and the required fonts will be available.
7. Click OK. Open the SVG in a browser and, when relevant, in the final editor or cutting application. Check dimensions, paths, text, clipping, gradients, transparency, and linked or embedded images.

File → Save As can also save an SVG. Export → Export As is usually preferable when the AI master must remain unchanged or when exporting selected artboards.

Using Inkscape

Inkscape can open some AI files, mainly files containing PDF-compatible content. Choose File → Open, review the import result, then choose File → Save As and select Plain SVG for maximum interoperability or Inkscape SVG when Inkscape-specific editing data is needed. Illustrator-only effects, layers, live text, meshes, and appearance settings may be changed or lost during import.

• For cutting machines, remove hidden or unnecessary objects and verify that intended cut lines are valid paths with the required fill and stroke settings. A feature that renders correctly in a browser may not be interpreted as a cut path.
• Use Plain SVG when smaller, more portable markup is required. Illustrator-specific SVG metadata can preserve additional editing information but may reduce interoperability.
