A cutting machine, browser, or design application may require an SVG instead of a JPEG so artwork can be resized or edited as paths. Converting it requires tracing the JPEG's pixels into vector objects; this works best for logos, icons, and other high-contrast graphics, not photographs.

What the JPEG format is

JPEG, usually identified by .jpg or .jpeg, is a lossy raster format that stores an image as a grid of colored pixels. Digital cameras, smartphones, scanners, web browsers, and image editors such as Photoshop, GIMP, and Affinity Photo commonly create JPEG files. JPEG compression makes photographs relatively small, but repeated editing and saving can add blocking, blur, ringing, and color artifacts. JPEG does not store editable vector paths or transparency.

What the SVG format is

SVG, or Scalable Vector Graphics, is an XML-based format that describes paths, lines, curves, shapes, fills, strokes, text, and other vector objects. Browsers and applications including Inkscape, Illustrator, CorelDRAW, and many cutting-machine programs can open SVG files.

Vector paths can be enlarged without pixelation, edited by object or color, and used for logos, illustrations, diagrams, icons, laser cutting, and plotter or vinyl-cutting workflows. An SVG can contain an embedded JPEG, but that only puts the raster image inside an SVG container; it does not create editable vector paths. Changing .jpg to .svg likewise does not convert the image.

How to convert a JPEG to SVG

With Inkscape

1. Open Inkscape and choose File → Import; select the JPEG.
2. Select the imported image and open Path → Trace Bitmap. In current Inkscape versions, the tracing controls appear in a panel, usually on the right.
3. For a black-and-white logo, choose Single scan → Brightness cutoff. For artwork with a small number of flat colors, choose Multiple scans → Colors and set an appropriate scan count.
4. Adjust the threshold or scan count while previewing the trace, then click Apply. Inkscape places the new vector over the original JPEG.
5. Move the vector aside, delete the raster original, and inspect the result. Remove speckles and unwanted shapes with the selection and node tools; simplify excessively detailed paths if necessary.
6. Choose File → Save As and select Plain SVG for broad software compatibility, or Inkscape SVG if Inkscape-specific data is needed. Save the result with an .svg extension.

A higher brightness threshold can close small gaps in a black logo but may merge nearby shapes. A lower color scan count produces simpler paths; a higher count preserves more variation while increasing file size and editing difficulty.

Quality and compatibility limits

JPEG-to-SVG conversion is a raster-to-vector trace, not a lossless format change. A photograph can produce thousands of irregular shapes, a large SVG, and a result that is difficult to edit; keeping the JPEG is usually more suitable for photographic use. Gradients, shadows, textures, compression artifacts, and fine details also make tracing less accurate.

Before tracing, crop the source, remove its background if possible, increase contrast, and use the highest-resolution JPEG available. Solid colors and sharp edges produce cleaner paths than heavily compressed or low-resolution images. If a cutting machine requires vector artwork, verify that the SVG contains paths rather than only an <image> element.

Applications can interpret SVG filters, gradients, clipping masks, masks, and fonts differently. Convert SVG text to paths when the receiving system may not have the original font. Save a copy of the JPEG because tracing and path simplification cannot be reversed.
