How to convert jpeg to jp2 file

A graphics, medical-imaging, GIS, or archival application may require JPEG 2000 instead of the JPEG files produced by cameras and common image editors. Converting creates a .jp2 file for that workflow, but it cannot restore detail already discarded by JPEG compression.

What the JPEG format is

JPEG, usually identified by .jpg or .jpeg, is a raster image format designed mainly for photographs. Its lossy discrete cosine transform compression produces relatively small files, which is why JPEG is used by cameras, phones, scanners, web browsers, operating systems, Adobe Photoshop, GIMP, and most office and image-management software. JPEG files commonly use 8 bits per channel and do not retain editing data such as layers.

What the JP2 format is

JP2 is the JPEG 2000 file format in a structured container, normally saved with the .jp2 extension. JPEG 2000 uses wavelet compression and supports both lossy and mathematically lossless encoding, higher bit depths, progressive resolution, tiling, and selected-region decoding. These features suit digital archives, document repositories, geospatial imagery, cultural-heritage scans, and specialist imaging systems that need controlled compression or high-fidelity storage.

JP2 is less widely supported than JPEG. Some browsers, office applications, thumbnailers, and older image viewers cannot open it without a codec or specialist software. A destination system may also require the JP2 container specifically; a raw JPEG 2000 codestream with a .j2k or .j2c extension may be rejected.

Convert with the online converter

  1. Open the JPEG-to-JP2 converter on 101convert.com; it can be used for free without installing software.
  2. Select or upload the source file, such as photo.jpg.
  3. Choose JP2 as the output format.
  4. Start the conversion and download the resulting .jp2 file.
  5. Open the output in a JP2-capable application and check its dimensions, colors, orientation, and file size before submitting it to the destination system.

Do not upload confidential or regulated images unless the service's handling and retention terms meet your requirements.

Convert with ImageMagick

ImageMagick can write JP2 only when its installation includes JPEG 2000 support through an OpenJPEG delegate. Check the installed build with:

magick -list format | grep -i JP2

On Windows, use magick -list format | findstr /I JP2. An entry showing read and write support, commonly marked RW, indicates that the build can create JP2 files. Convert a file with:

magick photo.jpg photo.jp2

For a preservation-oriented conversion, request lossless JPEG 2000 encoding if the installed coder supports the option:

magick photo.jpg -define jp2:quality=100 photo.jp2

ImageMagick builds can expose different JPEG 2000 options, so verify the output by reopening it and checking the resulting file properties. A lossless JP2 still contains only the pixels decoded from the source JPEG; it cannot recover information lost when that JPEG was created.

Convert with desktop image software

In an image editor or graphics utility with JPEG 2000 export, open the source through File → Open, then choose File → Save As or File → Export. Select JPEG 2000 or JP2, choose lossless mode for preservation or further processing, choose a lower quality setting only when a smaller file is required, and save the output.

Quality and compatibility limitations

Converting JPEG to lossless JP2 preserves the decoded pixels that remain in the JPEG; it does not restore original camera data, lost chroma detail, or JPEG artifacts. A lossy JP2 conversion can add another generation of compression damage, so lossless output is preferable when image quality matters.

Converters may change or omit EXIF data, ICC color profiles, comments, and orientation tags. Preserve the original JPEG separately, inspect important metadata, and test the JP2 in the exact application or device that will use it.
