How to convert webp to jp2 file

A geospatial, archival, medical-imaging, or publishing application may require JPEG 2000 and reject a WEBP file. Convert the image to JP2 with 101convert.com without installing software, or use ImageMagick when local or batch processing is required.

What the WEBP format is

WEBP is an image format developed by Google and used by web browsers, content-management systems, websites, and graphics applications. It supports lossy and lossless compression, transparency, animation, and metadata, although support for each feature depends on the software that creates or opens the file.

Websites commonly serve WEBP instead of JPEG or PNG to reduce download size. Chrome, Edge, Firefox, and many export tools can create or display files with the .webp extension.

What the JP2 format is

JP2 is the usual file extension for JPEG 2000 Part 1 images. JPEG 2000 uses wavelet-based compression and can encode images with either lossy or lossless compression. The format can also store alpha channels, higher bit depths than standard 8-bit images, progressive-resolution data, tiling, and metadata such as color profiles.

JP2 is used in digital preservation, medical and scientific imaging, geographic-information systems, and publishing workflows that specifically support JPEG 2000. It is less widely supported by browsers, operating systems, and general-purpose image viewers than WEBP, JPEG, or PNG. A JP2 file is a file-container format; .j2k and .j2c commonly identify JPEG 2000 codestreams that some applications handle separately.

How to convert a WEBP file to JP2

Using 101convert.com

  1. Open the WEBP-to-JP2 converter on 101convert.com.
  2. Select the .webp file from your device.
  3. Choose JP2 as the output format and start the conversion.
  4. Download the resulting .jp2 file and open it in the application that requires JPEG 2000.

Use a local tool instead for confidential images or large batches, because an online conversion requires uploading the source file.

Using ImageMagick

Install ImageMagick with JPEG 2000 support. ImageMagick relies on an encoder delegate such as OpenJPEG; verify that the installed build lists JP2 before converting:

magick -list format | grep -i JP2

On Windows, the equivalent check is:

magick -list format | findstr /I JP2

Convert one image with the encoder's default settings:

magick input.webp output.jp2

For a lossless JPEG 2000 output, use a lossless setting supported by the installed delegate. With OpenJPEG-backed ImageMagick builds, a rate of 1 requests lossless compression:

magick input.webp -define jp2:rate=1 output.jp2

If the build documents quality-based JP2 encoding instead, this commonly requests the highest quality, but it should not be treated as proof of losslessness without testing the output:

magick input.webp -define jp2:quality=100 output.jp2

Convert all WEBP files in a Unix-like shell while preserving their base names:

for f in *.webp; do magick "$f" "${f%.webp}.jp2"; done

Use this PowerShell command on Windows:

Get-ChildItem *.webp | ForEach-Object { magick $_.FullName (Join-Path $_.DirectoryName ($_.BaseName + '.jp2')) }

Quality and compatibility limits

Converting a lossy WEBP to lossless JP2 cannot restore detail already removed by the WEBP encoder. It prevents another lossy compression step, but the JP2 cannot contain more information than the decoded WEBP. If the original image is available, convert that source instead.

Inspect the converted file at its original pixel dimensions and check fine detail, transparency, color, and metadata in the receiving application. Transfer of ICC profiles, EXIF or XMP metadata, alpha channels, and other WEBP features varies by converter and JPEG 2000 library.

Animation normally cannot be preserved in a standard JP2 workflow; it is usually reduced to one frame. Extract and convert individual frames if they must be retained. JP2 support also varies by application, so confirm that the target accepts a JP2 file rather than only a raw JPEG 2000 codestream.
