What the WEBP format is

Quality and compatibility limits

Converting a lossy WEBP to lossless JP2 cannot restore detail already removed by the WEBP encoder. It prevents another lossy compression step, but the JP2 cannot contain more information than the decoded WEBP. If the original image is available, convert that source instead.

Inspect the converted file at its original pixel dimensions and check fine detail, transparency, color, and metadata in the receiving application. Transfer of ICC profiles, EXIF or XMP metadata, alpha channels, and other WEBP features varies by converter and JPEG 2000 library.

Animation normally cannot be preserved in a standard JP2 workflow; it is usually reduced to one frame. Extract and convert individual frames if they must be retained. JP2 support also varies by application, so confirm that the target accepts a JP2 file rather than only a raw JPEG 2000 codestream.
