Free online WEBP to DXF converter

CAD and CNC applications commonly require DXF geometry, while screenshots, logos, and scans often arrive as WEBP images. Converting them requires tracing the raster image into editable lines; changing the file extension cannot create usable DXF geometry.

What the WEBP format is

WEBP is a raster image format developed by Google for web delivery. It supports lossy and lossless compression, transparency, and animation, and is commonly used for website images, downloaded graphics, product images, logos, and screenshots.

Browsers, content-management systems, image editors such as GIMP and Photoshop, and graphics tools such as Inkscape can create or export WEBP files. A WEBP stores colored pixels rather than CAD entities, so it has no native lines, arcs, layers, dimensions, or real-world measurement units.

What the DXF format is

DXF, or Drawing Exchange Format, is an Autodesk CAD interchange format used by AutoCAD, DraftSight, BricsCAD, LibreCAD, CNC software, laser-cutting applications, and many GIS and engineering programs. It can store vector entities such as lines, polylines, circles, arcs, text, dimensions, layers, and some 3D data.

DXF is appropriate when the result must be edited, scaled, measured, plotted, machined, or exchanged with CAD software. Its geometry remains independent of screen resolution, but the conversion must supply a drawing scale and entity structure that the original raster image does not contain.

How to actually convert WEBP to DXF

Using Inkscape for a simple logo or outline

1. Open Inkscape and choose File → Import. Select the WEBP file and accept the default import settings.
2. Select the image and choose Path → Trace Bitmap. Use Brightness cutoff for a high-contrast silhouette, Edge detection for line-like artwork, or a color-tracing mode for a multicolor graphic. Adjust the threshold while viewing the preview, then apply the trace.
3. Move the traced vector away from the original image and delete the WEBP. Keep only the paths that should become CAD geometry.
4. Remove speckles and unwanted details with the Node tool. Combine or break paths as needed, and close open contours if the drawing will be used for cutting or filling.
5. Set a known size before exporting. Because WEBP has no physical dimensions, select the vector and enter a measured width or height in the toolbar if a reference measurement is available.
6. Choose File → Save As, select an AutoCAD DXF option such as Desktop Cutting Plotter (AutoCAD DXF R14), set the drawing units to match the target CAD system, and save the file.
7. Open the DXF in AutoCAD, LibreCAD, DraftSight, or the target CAM program. Check the scale, remove duplicate entities, join broken segments, and run the program's geometry-audit or repair function before manufacturing.

Quality, compatibility, and limitations

A WEBP-to-DXF conversion is normally a raster-to-vector trace, not a direct format rewrite. Lossy WEBP artifacts, anti-aliased edges, shadows, gradients, texture, and small text can produce irregular or overly complex paths.

Transparent backgrounds and color information may not survive as DXF fills or layers. Text is often converted to outlines rather than editable CAD text, and a photographed or scanned drawing will not automatically provide reliable dimensions. For precision work, use the original SVG, PDF, DWG, or CAD source when available, or redraw the important geometry from measured references.

Different DXF readers support different entity types. Basic lines, arcs, circles, and polylines have the widest compatibility; splines, hatch patterns, embedded images, and advanced 3D entities may be ignored or imported differently.
