A Janome or compatible embroidery machine requires JEF stitch data, while WEBP files usually contain only a web image. Converting the image makes it usable as an embroidery design, but the artwork must be interpreted as stitches rather than merely renamed.

What the WEBP format is

WEBP is a raster image format used for website graphics, previews, product images, and downloaded artwork. Browsers and applications such as Chrome, Photoshop, GIMP, and many phone cameras or image-export tools can create or save WEBP files. The file stores pixels, colors, and sometimes transparency; it contains no stitch order, thread changes, density, underlay, trims, or hoop settings.

What the JEF format is

JEF is a machine-embroidery design format associated with Janome and compatible embroidery machines. It stores stitch coordinates, color-change information, thread sequence, jumps, trims, and design metadata needed by the machine.

JEF is useful when sending a digitized design to a Janome machine or embroidery software that supports Janome designs. Its compact stitch representation is suitable for machine loading, but it is not an editable photographic or general-purpose image format.

How to convert WEBP to JEF

Using the 101convert.com converter

  1. Prepare a clean WEBP image with a simple subject, distinct colors, and a suitable aspect ratio for the intended hoop.
  2. Open the WEBP-to-JEF conversion page on 101convert.com; the file can be converted online for free without installing software.
  3. Upload the WEBP file, choose JEF as the output format, and start the conversion.
  4. Download the resulting JEF file and open it in Janome-compatible embroidery software to check the hoop size, stitch preview, color sequence, jumps, and estimated stitch count.
  5. Save the design to the machine's supported media or transfer it through the manufacturer's normal workflow. Sew a test sample before using the final fabric.

Using embroidery digitizing software

For better control, import the WEBP into embroidery digitizing software such as Janome Digitizer, Hatch Embroidery, Embird, or another application that can export JEF. Use File → Import or the equivalent image-import command, trace or manually define each filled region and outline, assign thread colors, set stitch direction and density, add underlay and pull compensation, then choose File → Export and select JEF.

Quality and compatibility limitations

A WEBP-to-JEF conversion is fundamentally a digitizing operation: pixels do not specify how stitches should be formed. Automatic tracing can create excessive stitches, tiny details, awkward thread jumps, missing underlay, or poor satin-stitch widths. Simplify the artwork before conversion and remove details that are smaller than the thread and fabric can reproduce.

Verify that the output fits the machine's actual hoop, uses supported color-change and trim commands, and does not exceed practical stitch-count or memory limits. JEF support varies by Janome model, so an embroidery editor may need to resave the design for a particular hoop or machine generation. Transparency in WEBP becomes empty background; it does not become a machine-readable absence of stitching unless the digitizer leaves that region unfilled.
