A WEBP image must be converted when an embroidery machine or digitizing program accepts Tajima DST files instead of web graphics. The process is not a simple image re-encoding: the artwork must be digitized into stitches, then exported as a DST design.

What the WEBP format is

WEBP is a raster image format developed by Google for web graphics. It commonly stores logos, illustrations, and previews with lossy or lossless compression, and you may encounter it after downloading artwork from a website or receiving it from a design application.

A WEBP contains colored pixels, not embroidery objects. It has no stitch direction, density, underlay, pull compensation, thread sequence, or machine movement data, so an embroidery program cannot use it as a finished machine design without digitizing.

What the DST format is

DST is a Tajima machine-embroidery format supported by many commercial and household embroidery machines. It stores commands for needle positions, jumps, trims where supported, and color-change stops; it does not preserve the original WEBP pixels or provide complete thread-color information.

DST is useful when a design must be loaded into an embroidery machine or exchanged between digitizing systems. Its broad machine compatibility makes it a common delivery format, but it is usually better to retain the editable source design in the native format of the digitizing application.

How to convert WEBP to DST

Using Inkscape and Ink/Stitch

  1. Convert the WEBP to PNG if your installed Inkscape version cannot import it reliably. With ImageMagick, run magick input.webp input.png. Use a sufficiently large source image; enlarging a small WEBP cannot restore missing detail.
  2. Open the PNG in Inkscape with File → Import. Keep the image as a visual reference and trace its shapes with closed vector paths, or use Path → Trace Bitmap as a starting point. Automatic tracing usually creates excessive nodes and does not produce usable stitches by itself.
  3. Delete details that are too small for the intended hoop, needle, and thread. Simplify outlines and separate fills, borders, and lettering into objects that can be assigned appropriate stitch types.
  4. Install Ink/Stitch, select each embroidery object, and set its stitch type, stitch length, density, underlay, stitch angle, pull compensation, and sequencing. Use satin columns for suitable narrow borders and lettering, fill stitches for larger areas, and running stitches for fine outlines.
  5. Open Extensions → Ink/Stitch → Params to check the design, then use Extensions → Ink/Stitch → Visualise and Export. Select DST as the output format and save the resulting file.
  6. Review the stitch simulation and check the design on the actual machine or a test fabric. Load the DST only after confirming hoop size, maximum stitch count, thread changes, and color order.

Using dedicated digitizing software

Hatch Embroidery, Wilcom, Brother PE-Design, and similar digitizing programs can import a WEBP directly or use a PNG conversion as the backdrop. Trace or manually digitize the artwork, apply fabric-specific stitch settings, simulate the sew-out, and choose Export → Tajima DST or the equivalent DST command. This produces better control than a generic file converter because the software creates embroidery geometry rather than merely changing the filename or image container.

You can also use the free converter on 101convert.com without installing software. For a raster WEBP, verify the generated stitch paths, density, trims, thread sequence, and machine compatibility before sewing; automated digitization may create unusable results from gradients, photographs, tiny text, or overlapping shapes.

Quality and compatibility limitations

Raster detail does not translate directly to thread. Gradients, shadows, anti-aliased edges, and photographic textures must be replaced with solid regions, stitch patterns, or omitted details. Small lettering commonly needs manual enlargement and a suitable embroidery font.

The finished design depends on fabric type, stabilizer, thread, needle, hoop size, and machine speed. A design that looks correct on screen can pucker, gap, or lose detail when sewn if density, underlay, or pull compensation is wrong.

DST has limited color metadata, so thread colors may appear differently in a simulator or machine. Set the intended thread chart separately, and use the digitizing software's native project file if later edits are likely. Confirm that the exported file fits the machine's maximum hoop area and that its stitch and color-change counts are within machine limits.
