Free online DWG to DST converter

Embroidery machines and many stitch editors require DST when a finished design must be loaded for sewing. Converting an editable embroidery design to DST creates a widely supported machine file, but the export can discard editing data from the source.

What the DWG format is

In machine embroidery, .dwg is not a universally standardized interchange format. Some embroidery digitizing applications use it for editable design or project files containing outlines, fills, stitch objects, sequencing, thread assignments, and other application-specific settings.

Because DWG structures vary by vendor and software version, a file may open only in the program that created it or in compatible versions of that program. Identify the originating application before attempting conversion. Do not assume that every file with a .dwg extension contains embroidery data.

What the DST format is

.dst is the Tajima stitch format, supported by many industrial embroidery machines and embroidery editors. It stores stitch coordinates and machine commands, including jumps, stops, and color-change events, rather than editable outlines and digitizing objects.

DST is suitable for sending a completed design to compatible equipment and software. Its compatibility comes with limited metadata: thread brands, color names, object boundaries, underlay settings, pull compensation, and other source-project properties may be missing or no longer editable. Color-change commands do not reliably identify the actual thread colors.

How to convert DWG to DST

Use the originating embroidery software whenever possible.

1. Keep an unchanged backup of the original .dwg file.
2. Open the file in the embroidery digitizing application that created it. If it fails to open, determine the vendor and version instead of trying unrelated DWG programs.
3. Check the finished design at the intended physical size. Verify the hoop area, stitch direction, object order, density, underlay, trims, thread sequence, and overlaps. Correct excessive density and other production problems before export.
4. Choose the program's machine-format command, such as File → Export or File → Save as, and select Tajima DST. The exact menu name varies by application.
5. Save the output with a short filename such as design.dst. Keep a separate record of thread colors and their order if the software does not preserve that information in a usable form.
6. Open the DST in an embroidery editor or stitch simulator. Confirm the dimensions, stitch count, color-change order, jumps, trims, and hoop fit before transferring it to the machine.

Applications such as Wilcom EmbroideryStudio, Hatch Embroidery, and Tajima DG can export DST when they support the particular source file. Their ability to open one DWG does not guarantee compatibility with DWG files from another vendor. If the source application cannot export DST, export from it to a project or design format accepted by a compatible digitizer; opening the file as a generic vector drawing can remove embroidery-specific sequencing and stitch settings.

Quality and compatibility limits

Treat DST as a production export, not as a replacement for the editable source. Retain the DWG for future resizing, resequencing, density changes, thread edits, and corrections.

Machines and editors can interpret stops, jumps, trims, and color changes differently. Check the target machine's supported hoop dimensions, stitch limits, thread requirements, and trim behavior. A file can open successfully while still exceeding the machine's physical sewing area or operating limits.

Resize the editable DWG and export again whenever possible. Scaling an already finished DST changes stitch coordinates but does not automatically recalculate density, underlay, pull compensation, or stitch length. Sew a test sample on the intended fabric before producing the final item.
