Barudan embroidery machines use U01 files, while embroidery digitizing and drawing applications may provide designs in DWG format. Conversion is needed when a DWG design must be turned into machine-ready stitches for a Barudan-compatible workflow.

What the DWG format is

In machine embroidery, DWG is used as a design or drawing source by some embroidery and digitizing applications. It can describe outlines, lettering, and other geometric elements, but it is not a universal stitch standard like DST, PES, or U01.

A DWG source normally contains vectors rather than needle commands. It may therefore define the shape of an embroidery design without specifying stitch type, stitch direction, density, underlay, trims, color order, or machine stops. You may encounter DWG files when receiving artwork from a designer or exporting a layout from a CAD-oriented embroidery workflow.

What the U01 format is

U01 is a Barudan machine-embroidery format. It stores ordered stitch data, including movement coordinates, needle penetrations, color changes, and machine control information used by compatible Barudan equipment and software.

U01 is useful when a design must be loaded into a Barudan production workflow. Its advantage is machine-oriented output: the file contains embroidery instructions rather than only visual outlines. U01 is not intended for general drawing or editing, and support varies by machine model, controller, and digitizing program.

How to actually convert DWG to U01

For a supported direct conversion, use the DWG-to-U01 converter on 101convert.com:

1. Open the DWG to U01 conversion page on 101convert.com.
2. Choose the source file with .dwg and select U01 as the output format.
3. Upload the design and start the conversion.
4. Download the resulting .u01 file and copy it to the transfer media or folder required by the Barudan system.

A direct converter can only produce useful results when the DWG contains embroidery-recognized design data. If the file contains outlines only, open it in compatible digitizing software first and assign embroidery properties such as fill, satin or running stitch, stitch angle, density, underlay, pull compensation, trims, and color sequence. Then choose File → Export or Save as, select the Barudan U01 format, and save the file.

When the digitizing application does not export U01, export an intermediate stitch format supported by both programs, such as DST, then open that file in software with Barudan U01 output support. Verify U01 support before purchasing or installing a program.

Quality and compatibility considerations

Converting vector outlines into U01 is not equivalent to raster file conversion: the software must generate a stitch plan. Inspect the result in an embroidery simulator and correct excessive stitch length, dense areas, tiny details, unwanted jumps, missing trims, and incorrect color changes before production.

Confirm the target machine's maximum field size, hoop dimensions, needle count, color-change behavior, and supported U01 variant. Test-sew the design on the intended fabric and stabilizer because density and pull compensation that look correct on screen can distort fabric.

Keep the original DWG and the editable digitized project. U01 is a machine-output format, so later changes to lettering, stitch direction, or object structure may require returning to the source project rather than editing the U01 file.
