A Barudan embroidery machine or its control software may require a design in U01 format, while the artwork is supplied as a DXF drawing. Converting it requires more than changing the filename: the DXF geometry must be digitized into stitches before it can be written as U01.

What the DXF format is

DXF, or Drawing Exchange Format, is a vector CAD format created by Autodesk for exchanging drawings between AutoCAD and other design applications. Embroidery digitizers encounter DXF files when a logo, lettering outline, pattern, or technical drawing is supplied by a CAD program, CorelDRAW, Adobe Illustrator, or another vector editor.

A DXF contains drawing geometry such as lines, arcs, polylines, circles, and layers. It normally contains no stitch order, stitch length, density, underlay, pull compensation, trims, or machine commands. A DXF therefore acts as source artwork rather than a ready-to-sew embroidery design.

What the U01 format is

U01 is a Barudan embroidery machine format used by compatible Barudan equipment and embroidery software. It stores machine-oriented stitch data, including needle movement and color or stop information in a form the target system can read.

U01 is useful when a Barudan machine, controller, or production workflow specifically requests that format. Its advantage over DXF is that the design contains sewing instructions instead of only vector outlines. U01 is not a universal embroidery format, so the exact machine model and software version should be checked before production.

How to actually convert DXF to U01

For reliable results, use embroidery digitizing software with both DXF import and Barudan U01 export, such as Wilcom EmbroideryStudio or Embird Studio. Menu names differ by version, and some editions require a separate machine-format module.

1. Open the DXF in a CAD or vector editor and remove dimensions, construction lines, duplicate paths, hidden layers, and text that should not be sewn.
2. Set the drawing to real-world size and confirm whether its units are millimetres or inches. Save a simplified DXF, preferably in an older commonly supported DXF version such as R12 or 2000 if the digitizer has import problems.
3. In the digitizing program, use File → Import Artwork or the equivalent DXF import command. Check the imported width and height against the original drawing before creating stitches.
4. Convert each object into an appropriate embroidery object. Use running stitches for outlines, satin columns for narrow borders and lettering, and fill or tatami objects for broad areas. Closed vector shapes may need manual cleanup before they can become fills.
5. Set stitch density, stitch length, underlay, pull compensation, entry and exit points, trims, and sewing order. Assign needle colors and add color changes where the design requires them.
6. Set the intended hoop and confirm that the design fits within the machine's sewing area. Run the software's stitch simulation to find gaps, excessive jumps, needle changes, and dense overlaps.
7. Choose File → Export Machine File, select Barudan U01 or U01, and save the result with a new filename. Do not merely rename design.dxf to design.u01; that does not convert the data.
8. Load the U01 file into the Barudan controller or its transfer software and sew a test on the intended fabric using the production thread, stabilizer, needle, and hoop.

Quality and compatibility limits

Automatic conversion cannot reliably infer whether a DXF line should become a running stitch, satin column, or filled area. Small gaps, open contours, overlapping shapes, and unsuitable density can produce thread breaks, fabric distortion, visible gaps, or excessive jumps. Manual digitizing is usually required for logos and detailed artwork.

DXF imports can also change scale when the source uses inches, millimetres, or unitless coordinates. Curves may be approximated by many short segments, increasing stitch count. Check dimensions and stitch count after import.

U01 compatibility depends on the Barudan model, controller, hoop limits, needle count, and software generation. Preserve the original digitized project file as well as the exported U01, because U01 generally does not retain the editable object structure needed for later design changes.
