What the WMF format is

In machine embroidery workflows, WMF is usually a Windows Metafile used as source artwork rather than as a finished stitch design. It stores lines, curves, fills, and text as scalable vector objects, so logos and lettering can be enlarged without the pixelation associated with raster images.

WMF files commonly come from Windows graphics programs, office software, older sign-making applications, and embroidery digitizing software during the artwork-import stage. A WMF contains visual geometry, not embroidery commands: it normally has no stitch order, stitch type, density, underlay, thread sequence, trims, or machine-specific needle movement.

What the U01 format is

U01 is a machine-embroidery stitch format associated with Barudan equipment and compatible embroidery software. It stores digitized machine instructions such as needle coordinates, color changes, and movement commands.

U01 is useful when a Barudan machine or its control software requires that format. Unlike WMF, it is intended for production and contains stitch data, but it is not generally convenient for editing shapes as vector artwork. The exact supported hoop sizes, color handling, trim commands, and machine controls depend on the U01-compatible software and machine model.

How to actually convert WMF to U01

Quality and compatibility limitations

A WMF-to-U01 result can require substantial digitizing correction because vector outlines do not specify how fabric should be filled. Small lettering, narrow columns, overlapping shapes, and sharp corners are especially likely to sew poorly without manual stitch settings.

Verify the output on the target machine or in its simulator before production. U01 compatibility can vary by Barudan model, software version, hoop definition, color format, and supported commands; a file that opens correctly may still need resizing, rehooping, or removal of unsupported trims.
