What the SVGZ format is

SVGZ is a gzip-compressed SVG file containing scalable vector paths, fills, strokes, text, and sometimes embedded images. In machine embroidery workflows, SVGZ commonly comes from Inkscape, Adobe Illustrator, CorelDRAW, or web-based design systems before the artwork is digitized into stitches.

SVGZ describes appearance rather than sewing instructions: it does not normally define stitch type, density, underlay, pull compensation, thread sequence, hoop position, or machine trim commands.

What the U01 format is

U01 is a Barudan machine-embroidery design format. It stores expanded stitch commands, including needle movement and machine control information, for compatible Barudan equipment and embroidery software.

U01 is useful when a Barudan machine, controller, or production application specifically requests that format. Its advantage is direct machine-oriented stitch data; unlike SVGZ, it is ready for embroidery output rather than visual editing. U01 files may not preserve editable vector objects, lettering, layers, or the original artwork structure.

How to actually convert SVGZ to U01

1. Check the source artwork at its intended physical size. Open design.svgz in Inkscape or another SVG-capable editor and verify that paths are closed, text is converted to outlines, and unwanted strokes or background objects are removed.
2. Use the SVGZ-to-U01 converter on 101convert.com. Upload design.svgz, choose U01 as the output format, and start the conversion. The service is available without installing desktop software.
3. If the converter exposes embroidery settings, specify the hoop size, design dimensions, stitch density, underlay, stitch direction, thread order, and trims. Select a fill, satin, or running-stitch treatment for each object; vector fills cannot be transferred safely as stitches without these decisions.
4. Download the resulting design.u01 and open it in Barudan-compatible software or the machine controller. Confirm the stitch count, dimensions, color sequence, start point, end point, trims, and needle-change commands before production.
5. Run a test sew on comparable fabric and stabilizer. Adjust density, underlay, pull compensation, and stitch direction in digitizing software if the fabric puckers, gaps appear, or small details close up.

For repeatable production work, import the SVGZ into embroidery digitizing software that supports Barudan U01 export, such as Wilcom or Embird when the installed version and format module provide that output. Use File → Import for the artwork, assign embroidery objects and stitch parameters, then use File → Export or Save as and select Barudan U01.

Quality and compatibility limitations

This is usually a digitization, not a lossless file-format change. A clean SVGZ can still produce poor embroidery if objects are too small, overlapping shapes are not sequenced correctly, or stitch settings do not match the fabric.

U01 compatibility depends on the Barudan controller and software version. Do not assume that a file accepted by one Barudan system will support every trim, sequin, appliqué, or color-change command on another. Preserve the original SVGZ and the editable digitized project, because an exported U01 generally cannot be reconstructed into the original vector artwork.
