Free online SVGZ to VP3 converter

Embroidery machines and digitizing software that accept VP3 cannot use an SVGZ drawing directly. Converting it produces a stitch-based design for Pfaff and Husqvarna Viking-compatible workflows, but the artwork must first be interpreted as embroidery objects.

What the SVGZ format is

SVGZ is an SVG vector graphic compressed with gzip. It stores paths, shapes, text, gradients, and other scalable artwork rather than needle movements. In machine embroidery, SVGZ files usually come from vector software or design libraries and may contain artwork intended for later digitizing. Inkscape and other SVG-compatible applications can open many SVGZ files; renaming the extension does not decompress the file.

What the VP3 format is

VP3 is a machine-embroidery design format associated with Pfaff and Husqvarna Viking embroidery systems. It stores stitch coordinates, thread changes, color information, and design metadata in a form supported by compatible embroidery machines and their editing software.

VP3 is useful when the destination machine or workflow specifically requires it. Unlike SVGZ, it describes needle actions, so it can be sewn without retaining editable vector geometry. Its main advantage is machine-oriented output with color-change information and support for relatively large embroidery designs, subject to the machine's hoop and memory limits.

How to convert SVGZ to VP3

Using 101convert.com

1. Open the SVGZ-to-VP3 converter on 101convert.com.
2. Upload the .svgz file and select VP3 as the output format.
3. Start the conversion and download the resulting .vp3 file when processing finishes.
4. Open the VP3 file in your embroidery software and check the stitch preview, thread sequence, design dimensions, and hoop placement before transferring it to a machine.

Using desktop digitizing software

1. Open the SVGZ in Inkscape. If the file does not load correctly, decompress it and save a plain .svg copy before importing it.
2. Install Ink/Stitch, then open the SVG in Inkscape and assign embroidery properties to each object, including stitch type, stitch spacing, underlay, pull compensation, thread color, and sequence.
3. Use Extensions → Ink/Stitch → Embroider or the equivalent export command, choose VP3, set the hoop and design size, and generate the file.
4. Reopen the output in embroidery software or a machine simulator. Correct excessive jumps, dense areas, small lettering, thread order, and objects that exceed the selected hoop.

Quality and compatibility limitations

A normal SVGZ-to-VP3 conversion is not a lossless format change: SVGZ contains drawing instructions, while VP3 requires a digitized stitch plan. Solid vector fills must become fill stitches, outlines must become running or satin stitches, and overlapping objects must be assigned an appropriate sewing order. Gradients, filters, transparency, clipping, and unsupported fonts may be flattened, ignored, or converted inaccurately.

Inspect the design at its intended physical size rather than relying on the original vector dimensions. Very narrow columns, tiny details, tight curves, and dense overlapping fills can cause thread breaks, puckering, or unreadable embroidery. Confirm that the selected VP3 variant, hoop size, thread colors, and maximum stitch count are accepted by the target machine; some machines require a particular VP3 revision or additional machine-specific transfer software.
