Free online PEC to VP3 converter

A Husqvarna Viking or Pfaff embroidery machine may require VP3 when a design is supplied in Brother-compatible PEC format. Converting the file makes the stitch design available to VP3-compatible software or equipment without reducing it to an ordinary image.

What the PEC format is

PEC is a binary machine-embroidery format associated primarily with Brother, Baby Lock, and compatible embroidery systems. It stores stitch commands, thread-change information, color blocks, and basic design data for automated stitching.

A PEC file contains embroidery instructions rather than a general image. Its data represents needle movements, jumps, thread changes, and design dimensions. Renaming design.pec to design.vp3 does not convert the file.

What the VP3 format is

VP3 is a machine-embroidery format used by Husqvarna Viking and Pfaff systems and supported by many embroidery editors. It preserves stitch instructions, color sections, design dimensions, and machine-oriented metadata in a format accepted by VP3-compatible equipment.

VP3 is useful when the destination machine or embroidery program specifically lists VP3 as an input format. Unlike PNG, JPEG, or SVG, it remains a stitchable design rather than a visual preview.

How to convert PEC to VP3

1. Open the PEC-to-VP3 converter on 101convert.com.
2. Select PEC as the input format and VP3 as the output format.
3. Upload the source file, such as flower.pec.

5. Open the VP3 file in embroidery software and check its dimensions, hoop assignment, stitch count, color sequence, and preview before transferring it to the machine.

Do not upload proprietary or commercially restricted designs to an online service unless its handling of uploaded files is acceptable. Use desktop software for sensitive designs or when the converted file needs editing.

Using desktop embroidery software

An embroidery editor that supports both PEC import and VP3 export can perform the same conversion while allowing corrections. Embird and PREMIER+ 2 are examples of desktop embroidery software that may support these formats; verify support in the installed edition before purchasing or opening a file. Format support can vary by product version and optional modules.

1. Open the program and use File → Open or File → Import to load design.pec.
2. Confirm the intended hoop size, scale, rotation, thread chart, color order, and stitch preview. Correct the design before exporting if required.
3. Choose File → Save As or File → Export, select VP3, and save the result under a new name such as design.vp3.
4. Close and reopen the exported file, then verify that the complete design fits the destination hoop and that color changes appear in the expected order.

Quality and compatibility limits

Conversion re-encodes the stitch data and translates format-specific metadata; it does not improve the underlying embroidery design. Thread-brand names and color values may be replaced with approximations, while hoop metadata, trims, jumps, and other machine-specific instructions may be interpreted differently.

A converted VP3 file must still fit the exact hoop supported by the destination machine. Conversion does not make an oversized design compatible. Check stitch density after any substantial resizing: enlarging can create gaps and poor coverage, while shrinking can cause excessive density, thread breaks, or fabric puckering.

Preview the file in the target software, then make a test stitch-out using comparable fabric and stabilizer. Keep the original PEC file because converting back will not restore lost metadata or edits made during export.
