A Husqvarna Viking or Pfaff embroidery machine may require a VP3 file when a design is supplied as EXP. Converting the stitch file lets compatible machine software open and preview the design without redigitizing it.

What the EXP format is

.exp is a stitch-based embroidery format commonly associated with Melco-compatible machines and software; Bernina workflows also use an EXP variant. It records needle movements, jumps, stops, and sometimes color-change information rather than the original editable objects used to create the design.

EXP files are therefore common in commercial embroidery production and when designs are exported from digitizing software for a particular machine family. The extension alone does not identify every EXP variant, so the software that created the file and the target machine both matter.

What the VP3 format is

.vp3 is a machine-embroidery format used primarily by Husqvarna Viking and Pfaff systems. It can store stitch data, color blocks, and design information used by compatible machine software for previewing and transferring multicolor designs.

VP3 is advantageous when the target machine explicitly accepts VP3 or needs its color-change structure and design metadata. It remains a machine-stitch format, not an editable digitizing project; conversion does not restore satin columns, fill objects, appliqué layers, or other original design objects.

How to convert EXP to VP3

1. Open the EXP-to-VP3 converter on 101convert.com. The built-in service can process the file without installed desktop software.
2. Upload the embroidery file and select EXP as the input format.
3. Choose VP3 as the output format and start the conversion.
4. Download the resulting .vp3 file after processing finishes.
5. Open the VP3 file in the target machine’s software. Check the hoop size, design orientation, stitch count, color sequence, and preview before copying it to a USB drive or sending it to the machine.

For local processing, applications such as Embird and Ink/Stitch can open supported EXP variants and export VP3 when that format is enabled by the installed version. The typical workflow is File → Open, select the EXP file, then use File → Export or File → Save as and choose VP3. Confirm that the application recognizes the file as embroidery data; an EXP file from one machine family may not be interpreted correctly by every program.

Quality and compatibility limits

Conversion generally retains the recorded stitch coordinates, but it cannot recreate information absent from the EXP file. Thread names and colors may be missing or assigned generically, and jumps, trims, stops, needle changes, and color blocks may need manual correction.

Verify that the design fits the exact hoop supported by the target machine. A VP3 file can still be rejected because of hoop dimensions, stitch count, machine-specific restrictions, unsupported thread settings, or an incompatible EXP variant. Preview the file and, when possible, test-stitch it on similar fabric; inspect long jumps and every color change before stitching the final item.

Keep the original EXP file unchanged. If later editing is required, use the original digitizing project or vector artwork rather than treating the converted VP3 as the editable master.
