What the CDR format is

In machine embroidery workflows, CDR normally refers to a CorelDRAW vector drawing rather than a stitch file. CorelDRAW creates CDR files containing paths, fills, outlines, text, and dimensions; embroidery digitizing software uses this artwork as the source for stitch planning. You commonly encounter CDR files when a designer supplies a logo, lettering layout, or appliqué outline prepared for print or later digitizing.

A CDR file does not normally contain stitch type, density, underlay, pull compensation, needle order, trims, or machine hoop information. Changing its filename extension cannot produce a usable embroidery design.

What the VP3 format is

VP3 is a machine-embroidery format associated mainly with Pfaff and Husqvarna Viking machines. It stores stitch coordinates, thread color changes, stop information, and design metadata for a compatible embroidery machine.

VP3 is useful when the target machine or embroidery application specifically lists VP3 support. It is generally more suitable for machine transfer than a graphic format because the design has already been converted into stitches, but it is not intended for editing original vector shapes.

How to actually convert CDR to VP3

Recommended workflow: digitize the artwork

1. Open the design in CorelDRAW and check its physical size, closed shapes, overlapping objects, lettering, and color separation.
2. Export a copy as SVG using File → Export. SVG is useful because embroidery digitizing applications can import it more reliably than a native CDR file. Preserve the original dimensions and convert text to curves if the receiving software does not have the required fonts.
3. Open the SVG in Inkscape with the Ink/Stitch extension installed, or import the original CDR directly into embroidery software that supports CDR, such as Wilcom EmbroideryStudio or Embird Studio.
4. Assign each object an embroidery method: fill stitches for broad areas, satin stitches for narrow columns and lettering, and running stitches for outlines or fine details. Set stitch direction, density, underlay, pull compensation, trims, and the thread color order.
5. Set the intended hoop size and confirm that the artwork fits within the machine's maximum sewing area. Use the software's stitch simulator to check gaps, excessive overlaps, short stitches, thread changes, and jump stitches.
6. Use the embroidery application's export command, choose VP3, and save the result with a new filename such as logo.vp3. Transfer it to the machine using the method specified for the machine, commonly USB media or its companion software.

Quality and compatibility limitations

Check the exported VP3 on the exact machine model or its official simulator. Confirm hoop dimensions, maximum stitch count, thread-color interpretation, supported trims, and whether the machine requires a particular VP3 revision. Sew a test sample because fabric stretch, stabilizer choice, thread weight, and stitch density can alter the result even when the file passes software validation.
