What the CDR format is

In machine embroidery, CDR usually means a CorelDRAW vector design used as source artwork for digitizing. CorelDRAW creates CDR files containing curves, fills, text, and outlines; these describe the intended shape but do not contain needle penetrations, stitch order, underlay, density, trims, or machine commands.

Embroidery digitizing software may import CDR artwork directly, although support depends on the CDR version and the application. Text should normally be converted to curves before transfer so missing fonts do not change the design.

What the U01 format is

U01 is a Barudan machine-embroidery stitch format. It stores the interpreted embroidery instructions required by compatible equipment, including stitch coordinates and movement information; it is not a general-purpose vector drawing format.

A U01 file is useful when sending a completed design to a Barudan machine or a digitizing program that supports Barudan U01 export. Its practical advantages are machine-oriented stitch data and compatibility with a specific production workflow, but it cannot preserve editable CDR objects as separate curves.

How to convert CDR to U01

Using the built-in online converter

1. Open the CDR-to-U01 converter on 101convert.com; the service can be used free without installing software.
2. Upload the .cdr file and select U01 as the output format.
3. Start the conversion and download the resulting .u01 file when processing finishes.
4. Open the output in Barudan-compatible embroidery software and inspect the preview, stitch count, color sequence, hoop limits, trims, and thread changes before transferring it to a machine.

A file extension change is not a conversion. If the converter cannot interpret the artwork or produces no usable stitch plan, use embroidery digitizing software such as Embird or another application that supports CDR import and Barudan U01 export.

Digitizing with desktop software

1. Open the artwork in the digitizer using File → Import. Convert text to curves in CorelDRAW first, and remove hidden objects, duplicate outlines, and unused colors.
2. Set the target hoop and design size before creating stitches. Scaling after digitizing can cause excessive density, gaps, or distorted satin columns.
3. Assign stitch types to each object: fill stitches for broad areas, satin stitches for suitable narrow columns, and running stitches for outlines or fine details.
4. Set stitch density, underlay, pull compensation, start and stop points, trims, and color order for the fabric and thread being used.
5. Run the software's stitch simulation, correct overlaps and jump commands, then choose File → Export or Save as and select U01 or Barudan U01.
6. Transfer the file using the machine's supported media or network method and test-stitch it on comparable fabric before production.

Quality and compatibility limits

The conversion from CDR to U01 is usually a digitizing operation, not a lossless format change. A vector outline does not specify how stitches should cover fabric, so automatic conversion may require manual editing and can produce unsuitable density, registration, thread paths, or excessive trims.

Check that the target machine supports the particular U01 variant and that the design fits its hoop. Verify thread colors against the machine's thread system because color numbers and brand names may not transfer consistently. A Barudan-compatible preview or test sew is required before production, especially for small lettering, tight curves, dense fills, and designs with many color changes.
