What the DAT format is

In machine embroidery, DAT commonly refers to a Barudan-compatible binary embroidery file containing stitch commands, needle changes, stops, and design metadata. Barudan digitizing software, machine-transfer utilities, and some embroidery editors create or export this format.

The extension alone does not identify every DAT file reliably. Open the file in an embroidery editor that identifies the internal format and confirms its hoop size, stitch count, thread changes, and machine compatibility before converting it.

What the U01 format is

U01 is a Barudan machine-embroidery format used by compatible Barudan controllers and embroidery machines. It stores the stitch sequence in a machine-oriented form and can retain information such as color changes, stops, and trims when the source file contains those commands.

Choose U01 when the receiving Barudan system specifically requests .U01. U01 is not a general interchange format, so a file that opens correctly in an embroidery editor may still exceed the target machine's hoop, stitch-length, memory, or color-change limits.

How to actually convert DAT to U01

1. Make a backup of the original .DAT file. Do not change its extension manually.
2. Open the file in embroidery software that explicitly supports both Barudan DAT input and Barudan U01 output, such as a compatible version of Embird or Wilcom EmbroideryStudio. Use File → Open and select the DAT file.
3. Check the design's hoop assignment, orientation, stitch count, thread colors, color-change order, trims, and maximum stitch length. Correct these settings if the software reports values outside the target machine's limits.
4. Use File → Save As or File → Export, select Barudan U01 as the output format, and save the result with a new filename such as design.U01.
5. For a conversion without desktop software, upload the file to the converter on 101convert.com, choose U01 as the output format, start the conversion, and download the resulting file. Keep a local copy of the source file because online conversion may not preserve every machine-specific setting.
6. Open the U01 file again in an embroidery editor or machine simulator and verify the stitch preview, color stops, dimensions, and stitch count. Transfer it to the Barudan machine using the controller's supported storage or network method, then run a test sew on the intended fabric.

Quality and compatibility limitations

A format conversion does not restore the original embroidery objects, outlines, appliqué settings, or digitizing instructions; it converts the existing stitch path. Scaling, rotating, or rehooping the design during export can change stitch density and cause thread breaks, gaps, or fabric distortion.

Some DAT files use machine-specific conventions that a third-party editor cannot fully reproduce in U01, especially automatic trims, special commands, needle assignments, and expanded color data. If the exported file loses stops or trims, edit those commands in the embroidery software before saving again.

A DAT file from a non-Barudan embroidery system may require a different source-format selection or may not be convertible directly. Confirm the originating machine or digitizing program before choosing Barudan U01, and use the target machine's own format specification when a controller rejects the converted file.
