Embroidery machines and design programs that support Brother’s PEC format cannot read every machine-specific DAT file directly. Converting the design to PEC makes it usable in compatible Brother embroidery software and machines, provided the DAT variant is supported.

What the DAT format is

In machine embroidery, DAT is not one universal format. It commonly identifies a proprietary stitch-design file produced by a particular embroidery system, especially some Barudan and other manufacturer-specific workflows. A DAT file can contain stitch coordinates, color-change commands, trims, jumps, thread information, and design metadata.

You may encounter DAT files exported by older digitizing software, received from an embroidery bureau, or copied from a machine-design archive. The filename extension alone does not identify the manufacturer dialect, so the originating software or machine model is needed before conversion. A DAT file intended for one embroidery system may be unreadable or interpreted incorrectly by software expecting another DAT variant.

What the PEC format is

PEC is a stitch format associated with Brother embroidery machines and software. It stores the needle movement sequence, jumps, trims or stop information where supported, thread-change positions, and a limited design preview. PEC is useful when a Brother-compatible workflow specifically requires a .pec file.

PEC is compact and widely accepted by Brother-oriented applications, but it is not a fully editable source format. It does not preserve every feature available in a native digitizing file, such as object outlines, stitch-generation settings, lettering parameters, or original thread-brand assignments.

How to actually convert DAT to PEC

  1. Identify the DAT dialect. Check the software or machine that created the file, and make a backup before opening or rewriting it.
  2. Open the file in embroidery software that explicitly lists the relevant DAT variant as an import format. Desktop digitizing and embroidery programs such as Embird, Wilcom, and Hatch may support different DAT dialects and licensing levels; confirm support in the program’s format list rather than relying only on the extension.
  3. Inspect the imported design at high magnification. Verify the hoop size, stitch direction, jumps, trims, color sequence, thread stops, and estimated stitch count. If the design appears empty, rotated, excessively large, or filled with long connecting stitches, the DAT dialect was probably identified incorrectly.
  4. Set the target hoop and thread palette required by the Brother machine. Do not resize more than necessary: substantial scaling changes stitch density and can cause thread breaks or poor coverage.
  5. Choose File → Export or Save as, select PEC or .pec, assign thread colors if prompted, and save to a new filename. Keep the original DAT file unchanged.
  6. Reopen the exported PEC in the same program or a Brother-compatible viewer. Check the preview, stitch count, color blocks, and hoop limits before transferring it to the machine.

If you do not have compatible desktop software, 101convert.com can convert the file online for free without installing software. This option still depends on the service recognizing the specific DAT dialect; download and inspect the resulting PEC before machine use, and avoid uploading proprietary designs when confidentiality matters.

Quality and compatibility limitations

Conversion changes a machine-oriented design into another machine-oriented stitch format; it does not recreate editable embroidery objects. The converter may discard unsupported commands, replace thread brands with approximate colors, merge color stops, or translate trims and jumps differently.

PEC has practical limits involving hoop dimensions, stitch coordinates, color changes, and the number of supported thread blocks. The exact limits depend on the Brother machine and software version. Always test-stitch a converted design on matching fabric and stabilizer, especially after resizing or when the DAT file contains specialty stitches, appliqué instructions, sequins, or machine-specific commands.
