Free online JPG to PEC converter

A Brother or Baby Lock embroidery machine may require a .pec design when the source artwork exists only as a JPG. The image must be digitized into stitch instructions before it can be previewed, transferred, and sewn.

What the JPG format is

JPG, also called JPEG, is a compressed raster format made from colored pixels. Cameras, scanners, websites, image editors, and applications such as Adobe Photoshop, GIMP, Affinity Photo, and Microsoft Photos commonly create or open JPG files.

A JPG records visual appearance, not embroidery data. It contains no stitch paths, thread order, fill direction, density, underlay, pull compensation, trim information, or physical hoop size. Low resolution, blurred edges, and JPEG compression artifacts make automatic tracing less reliable.

What the PEC format is

PEC is a machine-embroidery design format associated with Brother and supported by many Brother-compatible Baby Lock machines and embroidery applications. It stores stitch coordinates, color-change blocks, jump information, and design preview data in a machine-readable structure; the exact handling of trims and other commands depends on the software that writes the file.

PEC is compact and widely supported in home embroidery, but it is not a vector image format and cannot preserve every visual detail in a JPG. A machine may instead require a different format, such as Brother .pes, so check its manual before exporting.

How to convert a JPG to PEC

This is digitizing, not a lossless file-format conversion. Free desktop software can handle simple logos, while commercial applications provide more automation and editing controls.

1. Check the machine manual for its accepted format, hoop dimensions, maximum design area, thread system, filename rules, and transfer method. Set the target design size in millimeters; JPG pixel dimensions do not determine the sewn size.
2. Open the JPG in Inkscape with File → Import, or load it into a commercial digitizing application. Crop unnecessary background, remove noise, simplify colors, and increase contrast before tracing.
3. Trace the artwork as separate embroidery objects. Use running stitches for outlines and fine lines, satin columns for suitable narrow borders and lettering, and fill stitches for larger areas. Manual tracing usually produces a better stitch plan than one-click bitmap conversion.
4. Set stitch direction, density, stitch length, underlay, pull compensation, thread colors, object order, jumps, and trims. Sew large background areas before small details, and avoid excessive overlapping stitches.
5. In Ink/Stitch, edit object settings through Extensions → Ink/Stitch → Params, then inspect the sequence with Extensions → Ink/Stitch → Visualise and Export and export a file such as design.pec. Menu names can vary between versions.
6. Open the PEC file in the manufacturer’s software or an embroidery viewer. Confirm the hoop, stitch count, color sequence, and preview before copying it to the machine’s supported USB media or transfer system.
7. Sew a test on fabric and stabilizer similar to the final project. Correct density, underlay, compensation, or object order in the embroidery design, rather than modifying the original JPG.

Software and online options

Ink/Stitch with Inkscape is a free option for creating and exporting embroidery designs, but it requires manual object construction and technical settings. SewArt is designed for converting bitmap artwork into embroidery objects. Hatch Embroidery, Embird, Brother PE-DESIGN, and professional Wilcom software provide bitmap import, assisted digitizing, lettering, manual editing, and export options; confirm that the installed edition can write PEC rather than only its native project format.

Generic online converters such as image-format conversion sites cannot produce a reliable PEC design because they do not determine stitch types, density, underlay, compensation, or sewing order. An online embroidery digitizing service can accept a JPG and deliver PEC, but provide the target machine, hoop size, fabric, stabilizer, thread chart, and required output format. Review the returned file in desktop embroidery software before sewing; specialist manual digitizing is preferable for lettering, photographs, gradients, tiny details, and repeated production.

Quality and compatibility limits

Photographic shading, soft edges, and very fine lines must be simplified into thread areas or omitted. A finished PEC file cannot regain detail when enlarged; resize the artwork and regenerate or re-digitize it.

Very narrow columns, tiny details, and excessive stitch density can cause thread breaks, puckering, needle damage, or poor coverage. Results depend on fabric, stabilizer, needle, thread, and machine settings, so a design that previews correctly may still require adjustments after a test sew.

PEC color blocks refer to thread positions or palette colors, not guaranteed physical thread shades. Different software may display the same block differently, and some machines impose restrictions on headers, previews, hoop size, stitch commands, or transfer media. Verify the file on the actual machine before production.
