What the PDF format is

PDF (Portable Document Format) preserves page layout, text, vector paths, and embedded raster images across operating systems. Graphic designers commonly create PDFs with Adobe Illustrator, CorelDRAW, Inkscape, Affinity Designer, and CAD or publishing software; scanners and office applications also produce them.

In machine embroidery work, a PDF may contain a logo, line drawing, lettering, or printed pattern reference. It normally contains no stitch order, thread-change data, underlay, density, pull compensation, or machine-specific hoop settings. A vector PDF is easier to digitize than a scanned PDF because its outlines can often be imported or traced cleanly.

What the PEC format is

PEC is a machine embroidery design format associated primarily with Brother and compatible Baby Lock machines. It stores stitch coordinates, color-change information, and design metadata needed to sew a pattern rather than merely display its artwork.

PEC is useful when the target machine or embroidery editor specifically requires .pec. It is widely supported by embroidery applications, but it is an older, machine-oriented format with restrictions on stitch count, design size, color handling, and available metadata. The format does not preserve the editable vector structure of the source PDF.

How to convert PDF to PEC

This is a digitizing process, not a normal document conversion. The PDF artwork must be converted into embroidery objects, assigned stitch types and sewing order, and then exported as PEC.

1. Check the PDF at its original scale. If it is scanned or contains only a bitmap, clean the image first and trace the required shapes; OCR or automatic vector tracing may need manual correction.
2. Open the artwork in a digitizing application. A free desktop workflow uses Inkscape with the Ink/Stitch extension: open Inkscape, choose File → Import, and select design.pdf. Import the required page or vector artwork, then remove irrelevant text, backgrounds, and page elements.
3. Convert or redraw the artwork as closed embroidery shapes. Assign satin columns to suitable narrow lettering and borders, fill stitches to larger areas, and running stitches to outlines or fine details. Set thread colors, stitch direction, underlay, density, pull compensation, and the intended hoop dimensions.
4. Arrange objects in sewing order to reduce unnecessary jumps and trims. Keep small details large enough for the needle and thread; extremely thin PDF lines cannot be reproduced faithfully as stitches.
5. Preview the design with the software's stitch simulator. Inspect gaps, excessive thread travel, overlapping fills, needle penetrations, color changes, and the design's position inside the selected hoop.
6. Export the finished design through Extensions → Ink/Stitch → Embroider, choose PEC as the output format, and save it as design.pec. Embird, Hatch, PE-Design, and Wilcom can perform equivalent digitizing and PEC export through their own import and export menus.
7. Open design.pec in the target machine's embroidery editor or transfer utility before copying it to a USB drive or machine. Confirm hoop size, thread colors, scale, and estimated stitch count.

Quality and compatibility limitations

Automatic tracing rarely produces production-ready embroidery. Large solid areas need suitable fill direction and underlay, satin stitches need controlled column width, and small lettering often requires a dedicated embroidery font. A high-resolution PDF does not guarantee better stitching because fabric behavior, thread weight, needle size, and machine tension affect the result.

Set the final size and hoop before digitizing. Enlarging a PEC file after export changes stitch spacing and can cause gaps, excessive density, or thread breaks; resizing within the embroidery editor is safest only within the software's tested limits. Test-sew the design on fabric similar to the final garment.

PEC color information is limited compared with modern native design formats, and thread names may not transfer accurately. The machine may display approximate colors, so match the exported color sequence against the physical thread chart. Keep the original PDF and the editable digitized project because PEC is intended for machine execution, not for recovering shapes or making detailed design edits.
