TI-Nspire calculators and desktop software require .tns documents, while worksheets, manuals, and reports commonly arrive as PDFs. Converting is useful when PDF content must be opened alongside TI-Nspire calculations, graphs, or notes rather than viewed only as a fixed page.

What the PDF format is

PDF, or Portable Document Format, stores a document's page geometry, fonts, text, images, vector graphics, and sometimes interactive elements in a consistent layout. Schools, publishers, businesses, scanners, web browsers, office suites, and desktop-publishing applications use it for forms, invoices, worksheets, manuals, and print-ready files.

A PDF preserves how a page looks; it does not provide native TI-Nspire Calculator, Graphs, Geometry, or spreadsheet objects. A PDF may contain selectable text, or it may consist of scanned page images that require OCR or image handling.

What the TNS format is

.tns is the native document format used by Texas Instruments TI-Nspire software and compatible graphing calculators. One document can contain Notes, Calculator, Graphs, Geometry, Lists & Spreadsheet, and Data & Statistics pages, depending on the software and hardware version.

TNS is useful because formulas, variables, tables, graphs, and calculations can be rebuilt as interactive TI-Nspire content. It is not a general-purpose replacement for PDF: arbitrary page layouts, PDF annotations, fillable forms, digital signatures, embedded media, JavaScript, and complex print features do not become equivalent TNS features.

Convert a PDF with 101convert

The generated document may preserve pages as imported content rather than reconstructing every PDF element as editable TI-Nspire material. If formulas, graphs, or tables must be usable rather than merely visible, inspect and rebuild them manually after conversion.

Rebuild the document manually

1. Open the PDF and determine whether its text can be selected. For a scanned PDF, run local OCR with software such as Adobe Acrobat Pro or Tesseract, or use the original pages as images. Check OCR output because fractions, superscripts, mathematical symbols, and tables are often misread.
2. Open compatible TI-Nspire desktop software and create a new document with File → New Document. Add a Notes page for instructions and ordinary text.
3. Copy selectable text into Notes. Re-enter formulas in TI-Nspire math boxes or Calculator pages, and recreate tables, graphs, and statistical material in the corresponding TI-Nspire page types. Pasted PDF equations do not automatically become editable calculator expressions.
4. For pages that must retain their visual layout, export them from a desktop PDF application with File → Export → Image or an equivalent command. Use PNG for text, equations, and line drawings; use JPEG mainly for photographs. About 150–200 dpi is usually a practical starting point for calculator viewing.
5. In a Notes page, insert each exported image with Insert → Image. Use separate Notes pages for separate source pages, and crop or split dense pages so their text fits the calculator display.
6. Save the document with File → Save As using a name such as worksheet.tns. Transfer it with compatible TI-Nspire desktop software or the appropriate TI-Nspire connection utility, then open it on the target device.

Quality and compatibility limits

An imported page image is not searchable, selectable as text, or editable as separate PDF objects. It also cannot preserve PDF functions such as form fields, hyperlinks, annotations, layers, signatures, or embedded media as working TI-Nspire features.

TI-Nspire screens are much smaller than A4 and US Letter pages. A complete page image with normal printed text may require zooming and panning even at high resolution. Remove unused margins, split crowded pages, or replace screenshots with Notes text and native TI-Nspire objects where readability matters.

High-resolution images increase TNS size, consume calculator storage, and can slow opening and navigation. Keep only required pages and test the file with the exact TI-Nspire model and software version that will be used; newer page types or features may not work on older hardware or software.

Do not rename a PDF to .tns. The extension change does not alter the file structure, so TI-Nspire software will not recognize the result as a valid TNS document.
