Typical workflow:

• Import the PDF into an OMR program.
• Run recognition and review the detected notes, rests, clefs, measures, and other symbols.
• Correct errors manually inside the OMR software or after export in a notation editor.
• Export the result as MusicXML (.musicxml or .mxl).

Important: OMR conversion is rarely perfect. Expect to fix rhythm, beaming, accidentals, slurs, dynamics, articulations, and layout issues after conversion. For best results, use a clean, high-resolution PDF with clear staff lines and minimal distortion.

If the PDF is a scanned image, make sure the OMR tool supports image-based import. If the PDF is text-based but not a score export, it still cannot be converted directly to MusicXML without recognition.

Note: MusicXML is commonly saved as .musicxml or .xml; .mxl is the compressed MusicXML package format.

In short, direct PDF to MusicXML conversion is usually not available, but you can often recover the notation through OMR software and then export to MusicXML.
