What the AAC format is

AAC, or Advanced Audio Coding, is a lossy compressed audio format used for music, podcasts, voice recordings, and streaming. Apple Music, iTunes, iPhones, Android devices, browsers, and many recording applications create or store AAC audio, commonly in .aac, .m4a, or .mp4 containers.

The file contains sampled sound rather than notes, measures, key signatures, or instrument parts. Compression can remove frequency detail, but it does not prevent playback in compatible media players.

What the MUSICXML format is

MUSICXML is an XML-based interchange format for symbolic notation. It represents pitches, durations, rests, voices, measures, clefs, key signatures, time signatures, dynamics, lyrics, articulations, and other score data.

Notation programs such as MuseScore, Finale, and Sibelius can open or import MUSICXML and then edit, print, transpose, or export the resulting score. MUSICXML is appropriate when the destination needs editable notation rather than an audio recording.

How to actually convert AAC to MUSICXML

AAC-to-MUSICXML conversion is an automatic transcription, not a lossless conversion. Audio does not reliably identify the intended notation: the same sound can be written with different enharmonic spellings, rhythms, tuplets, meters, or voicings.

Monophonic recordings with little noise produce the most usable results. Polyphonic mixes, sustained pedal, drum tracks, distortion, reverb, tempo changes, and low-bitrate AAC commonly cause missing notes, false notes, incorrect octaves, and inaccurate note lengths.

For best results, use the highest-quality source available, isolate one instrument or melody before transcription, and verify the exported score against the recording. MUSICXML versions and feature support vary between notation programs, so inspect the imported file rather than assuming that every expression, sound assignment, or layout detail will transfer.
