Programs such as MuseScore, Sibelius, and Finale cannot edit a photograph of sheet music as notation; they need structured MusicXML data. Converting a JPEG scan or phone image requires optical music recognition (OMR), which detects notes, rhythms, staff lines, text, and other notation before exporting an editable score.
What the JPEG format is
JPEG is a pixel-based image format commonly used for photographs, scanned sheet music, screenshots, and images exported from graphics software. Phones, scanners, web browsers, image editors, and PDF-to-image tools can create .jpg or .jpeg files.
A JPEG stores colored or grayscale pixels rather than musical objects. A note, rest, clef, or time signature is therefore only an image pattern; notation software cannot directly select or edit it. JPEG compression can also blur staff lines and symbols, especially after repeated saving.
What the MUSICXML format is
MusicXML is a structured interchange format for written music. It represents parts, measures, pitches, durations, voices, clefs, key signatures, time signatures, dynamics, lyrics, articulations, and many layout elements as data rather than pixels.
MusicXML files usually use .musicxml or .xml; compressed MusicXML packages commonly use .mxl. Notation programs including MuseScore, Finale, Sibelius, Dorico, and many educational and engraving applications can import or export these formats. MusicXML is useful when a scanned score must be corrected, transposed, rearranged, archived as structured notation, or moved between notation programs.
How to actually convert JPEG to MUSICXML
Using the online converter
- Prepare a JPEG containing a clear, straight-on image of one score page or a complete page sequence.
- On 101convert.com, choose the JPEG-to-MUSICXML conversion tool.
- Upload the
.jpgor.jpegfile, selectMUSICXMLas the output format, and start the conversion. - Download the resulting
.musicxmlfile and open it in MuseScore or another compatible notation application. - Compare every measure with the source image and correct recognition errors before printing or publishing the score.
This option runs in a browser and does not require installing conversion software.
Using desktop OMR software
Audiveris is a desktop OMR application designed to recognize printed sheet music and export MusicXML. For a local conversion:
- Crop away borders, page shadows, unrelated text, and empty margins. Convert a color photograph to grayscale if the software produces better contrast from it.
- Open the image in Audiveris with File → Load or the equivalent image-import command.
- Run the recognition process, then inspect detected staff lines, measures, clefs, key signatures, time signatures, notes, rests, and lyrics in the score view.
- Correct uncertain symbols or missing system connections using Audiveris’s correction tools.
- Export through File → Export → MusicXML, then save the result as
score.musicxmlor the supported MusicXML package format. - Open the exported file in MuseScore or another notation editor and repair notation that did not survive recognition.
MuseScore can edit and export MusicXML, but it is primarily a notation editor; it does not replace an OMR step for ordinary JPEG sheet-music images.
Quality, compatibility, and limitations
OMR accuracy depends more on the source image than on the JPEG extension. Use a front-facing scan at roughly 300–400 dpi, even lighting, high contrast, visible staff lines, and no perspective distortion. A clean monochrome scan usually produces better recognition than a compressed phone photograph.
Recognition commonly fails on handwriting, damaged or tightly spaced notation, decorative fonts, unusual tablature, multiple voices, tuplets, beams crossing voices, ornaments, pedal markings, and overlapping lyrics. JPEG artifacts can cause false noteheads or broken staff lines. Multi-page scores may also require page-by-page recognition and manual ordering.
MusicXML transfers musical structure, but import programs may interpret layout, fonts, spacing, repeats, playback markings, and engraving details differently. Check pitch, octave, duration, accidental, tie, measure numbering, part assignment, lyrics, and repeats manually; an exported file can open successfully while still containing incorrect notation.
