What the JPEG format is
JPEG is a raster image format commonly produced by scanners, cameras, phones, and graphics editors. In music composition, it usually contains a page of printed or handwritten notation as pixels rather than editable notes. JPEG compression reduces file size but can blur staff lines, noteheads, accidentals, and lyrics, which affects recognition accuracy.
What the MSCX format is
MSCX is MuseScore’s uncompressed, XML-based score format. It stores editable musical objects such as staves, notes, rests, clefs, key signatures, time signatures, dynamics, lyrics, text, and layout information. MuseScore uses MSCX for notation editing and playback; unlike JPEG, it represents the score structurally rather than as a flat picture. Its XML structure is also readable and can be inspected or processed with suitable tools.
How to actually convert JPEG to MSCX
The quickest option is the free converter on 101convert.com, which does not require software installation:
- Prepare the clearest available JPEG. Crop out borders, rotate it upright, and use a high-resolution image with the complete staff system visible.
- Open the JPEG-to-MSCX converter on 101convert.com.
- Upload the image, choose
MSCXas the output format, and start the conversion. - Download the resulting
.mscxfile and open it in MuseScore. - Check every measure, then use File → Save As to save the corrected score.
For local processing, Audiveris can perform optical music recognition on the JPEG. Export the recognized result as MusicXML, open that file in MuseScore, inspect the notation, and use File → Save As to create an .mscx file. Audiveris and MuseScore must be installed separately for this workflow.
Quality and compatibility limits
This is not a pixel-preserving format conversion: the image must be interpreted as music notation. Recognition can misread tied notes, beams, tuplets, ornaments, grace notes, handwritten symbols, overlapping voices, lyrics, and damaged staff lines. JPEG artifacts and skewed pages increase errors.
Use at least 300 dpi for scanned notation, strong contrast, even lighting, and one clean page per image when possible. After conversion, verify pitch, rhythm, key and time signatures, articulation, repeats, dynamics, lyrics, and page layout manually. The MSCX file contains recognized notation, not the original JPEG page, and it may not reproduce the source engraving exactly.
