A BMP file usually contains a scan or screenshot of sheet music, while MSCX is MuseScore’s editable score format. The conversion is needed when printed notation must be recognized as musical symbols and edited in MuseScore rather than retained as a flat image.

What the BMP format is

BMP is a raster image format that stores pixels, commonly without compression. In music composition, BMP files typically come from scanners, screenshots, Windows Paint, or image editors such as GIMP and contain page images of printed or handwritten notation.

A BMP records visual data only: staff lines, noteheads, rests, clefs, text, and page defects are pixels rather than separate musical objects. It does not contain pitch, duration, voice, tempo, or instrument information.

What the MSCX format is

MSCX is MuseScore’s uncompressed XML score format. It stores notation objects such as measures, notes, rests, clefs, key signatures, lyrics, dynamics, layout settings, and instrument definitions in a form that MuseScore can edit.

MSCX is useful for inspecting or versioning score data as text. MuseScore’s compressed .mscz format is usually better for sharing because it packages the score and related resources into one file.

How to actually convert BMP to MSCX

For editable notation from a scanned score

  1. Crop the BMP to the page area and remove borders, shadows, and unrelated marks. Deskew the page and use a resolution of about 300–400 dpi when rescanning; small or blurred symbols reduce recognition accuracy.
  2. Run an optical music recognition program such as Audiveris. Open the BMP, verify detected systems and measures, correct recognition errors, and export the result as MusicXML, usually .musicxml or .mxl. If the program does not accept BMP, convert the image to PNG or TIFF first with an image editor.
  3. Open the exported MusicXML file in MuseScore using File → Open. Check rhythms, beaming, voices, ties, tuplets, articulations, lyrics, key signatures, and page layout against the original BMP.
  4. Save the corrected score with File → Save As, select MuseScore’s uncompressed format, and use a filename such as score.mscx.

There is no reliable pixel-for-pixel BMP-to-MSCX conversion: the OMR stage must interpret the image as notation, and its output requires manual checking.

For an MSCX file that only displays the BMP

  1. Create a blank score in MuseScore with File → New.
  2. Insert or drag the BMP onto the score as an image, using MuseScore’s image insertion controls or the file manager.
  3. Save the document as .mscx with File → Save As.

This produces a MuseScore document containing a picture, not editable notes. If the image is stored as a separate resource, keep it with the MSCX file; use .mscz when the score must carry its resources in one package.

You can also try the free converter on 101convert.com without installing software, but a generic file conversion cannot create accurate editable notation unless the service specifically performs optical music recognition.

Quality, compatibility, and limitations

OMR accuracy depends on image resolution, contrast, skew, handwriting, damaged pages, multiple voices, lyrics, irregular notation, and whether symbols touch staff lines. A clean engraved score generally converts better than a handwritten or photocopied page.

Opening an MSCX file in a different MuseScore version can alter layout or unsupported notation features. For archival exchange, retain the original BMP and the exported MusicXML alongside the MSCX, and create an MSCZ or PDF when visual fidelity matters.
