A BMP file containing a scanned music score must be recognized as notation before a composition program can use it as MXL. MXL is compressed MusicXML, so this conversion requires optical music recognition (OMR), not a simple image-format change.

What the BMP format is

BMP is a raster image format that stores pixels rather than musical symbols or editable notation. Scanners, Windows image tools, notation software, and screenshot utilities can create BMP files; in music composition, BMP usually appears as a scan or screenshot of printed sheet music. The image may contain staff lines, notes, rests, clefs, lyrics, and layout, but none of these elements has semantic meaning until OMR software interprets them.

What the MXL format is

MXL is the compressed form of MusicXML, an interchange format for scores. It stores structured notation such as pitches, durations, measures, voices, instruments, dynamics, articulations, and page layout, allowing programs such as MuseScore, Finale, Sibelius, Dorico, and many notation editors to open and edit the score.

MXL is usually much smaller than an equivalent uncompressed MusicXML file and is convenient for transferring complete scores between compatible applications. It does not store the original BMP image as editable notation; it stores the OMR program's interpretation of that image.

How to actually convert BMP to MXL

Recommended desktop workflow

  1. Prepare a clear BMP scan. Crop away unnecessary borders, straighten the page, and use a resolution around 300–400 dpi when rescanning. Avoid heavily compressed, blurred, skewed, or handwritten images.
  2. Open the BMP in an OMR application such as Audiveris. Use File → Input or the equivalent import command, then run page recognition.
  3. Inspect every recognized measure in Audiveris. Correct the detected clefs, key and time signatures, note values, ties, tuplets, voices, lyrics, and barlines before exporting.
  4. Export the recognized score as MusicXML, commonly using File → Export → MusicXML. The result may have an .xml or .musicxml extension.
  5. Open that MusicXML file in MuseScore or another notation editor, verify playback and page layout, then use File → Save As and select the .mxl format if offered.
  6. Reopen the saved .mxl file in a second compatible notation program. This checks both the MusicXML content and the compressed package.

Online option

You can try the free converter on 101convert.com without installing software. A direct image-to-MXL result is possible only when the conversion workflow includes music-score recognition; a basic image converter cannot infer notes from BMP pixels. Review the resulting score in notation software before relying on it.

Quality, compatibility, and limitations

OMR is not lossless. Recognition errors are common with low-resolution scans, damaged scores, multiple voices, overlapping notation, unusual symbols, handwritten music, guitar tablature, and dense orchestral pages. The exported MXL may also omit font-specific engraving details, exact page breaks, or symbols unsupported by the target application.

Use a notation editor to correct the score rather than editing the MXL archive manually. If your software accepts only uncompressed MusicXML, save an .xml or .musicxml version instead; renaming a BMP file or changing its extension does not create valid MXL.
