A TIF file from a scanned score contains page pixels, while an MXL file contains editable musical notation for programs such as MuseScore, Dorico, and Finale. The conversion is needed when a scanned part must be transposed, rearranged, played back, or imported into notation software.
What the TIF format is
TIF, also written TIFF, is a raster image format commonly produced by scanners, multifunction printers, music-archive systems, and image editors. In music composition, it usually stores one or more pages of printed sheet music as pixels rather than notes, rests, rhythms, voices, lyrics, or instrument information.
TIF supports lossless compression and high resolutions suitable for notation scanning. A file may contain grayscale or monochrome pages, multiple pages, or color annotations. Programs such as Adobe Photoshop, GIMP, Preview, and scanner software can create or edit it, but notation applications generally cannot treat its symbols as editable musical objects.
What the MXL format is
MXL is the compressed form of MusicXML, an interchange format for symbolic musical notation. It stores structured information such as pitches, durations, measures, clefs, key signatures, time signatures, lyrics, dynamics, articulations, layout data, and part definitions.
Notation programs including MuseScore, Finale, Sibelius, Dorico, and many educational and engraving applications can import or export MXL. Because MXL is normally a ZIP-based compressed MusicXML package, it is considerably smaller than an equivalent uncompressed MusicXML file and is convenient for exchanging scores between applications. It does not preserve the original scanned page as an editable background unless that image is separately embedded or retained.
How to actually convert TIF to MXL
This is an optical music recognition conversion, not a normal image-format conversion. The software must analyze the printed symbols and reconstruct notation before it can write MusicXML.
Using Audiveris
- Prepare the source scan at approximately 300–400 dpi. Deskew pages, crop empty borders, and remove speckles or shadows; keep staff lines and noteheads sharp.
- Install Audiveris and open the TIF through File → Open. For a multipage TIFF, verify that every page appears in the correct order.
- Run Audiveris optical music recognition. Review detected systems, staves, measures, and page connections, correcting recognition problems in the score editor where available.
- Export the recognized score through the MusicXML export command. Select the compressed MusicXML option, or save the resulting MusicXML package with the
.mxlextension if the export dialog provides separate compressed and uncompressed choices. - Open the MXL in MuseScore or another notation program. Compare every page with the TIF and correct pitches, durations, barlines, voices, ties, tuplets, lyrics, and articulations before using the file for engraving or playback.
For command-line processing, an Audiveris installation can use a command such as audiveris -batch -export -output out score.tif; check the installed version's export behavior because some versions produce MusicXML output that must then be selected or packaged as MXL.
Using the online converter
You can also convert the file for free on 101convert.com without installing software: upload the TIF, choose MXL as the output format, start the conversion, and download the result. For a score with several pages or complex notation, inspect the exported file in a notation editor rather than assuming that a completed conversion means every symbol was recognized correctly.
Quality and compatibility limitations
A TIF contains visual information only, so no converter can recover musical meaning that is absent or unreadable in the scan. Recognition accuracy decreases with low resolution, skewed pages, handwritten notation, damaged originals, overlapping annotations, unusual fonts, dense polyphony, cue notes, irregular spacing, and scores containing complex ornaments or nonstandard notation.
Audiveris and similar tools may misread small note values, accidental scope, beams, ties, slurs, lyrics, dynamics, and staff assignments. Multi-voice piano music and scores with many instruments require especially careful checking. MXL also describes musical structure rather than exact page appearance, so spacing, line breaks, fonts, system layout, and engraving may change when another application opens the file.
Keep the original TIF with the exported MXL as a visual reference. If recognition is poor, split a multipage scan into individual page images, improve contrast, rescan at a higher resolution, or correct the notation manually in MuseScore before exporting a new MXL.
