What the M4A format is

M4A is an audio container commonly using AAC compression, although it can also contain lossless ALAC audio. Apple devices and applications, smartphones, voice recorders, music services, and desktop media programs frequently create M4A files.

An M4A file stores sampled sound, such as a song, rehearsal, spoken recording, or instrument performance. It does not normally contain the symbolic note, rhythm, voice, and measure data required by notation software.

What the MXL format is

MXL is the compressed form of MusicXML, an interchange format for digital sheet music. It can store pitches, durations, rests, key signatures, time signatures, dynamics, articulations, lyrics, parts, and staff layout information.

Notation programs such as MuseScore, Finale, and Sibelius can open or export MusicXML and MXL files. MXL is smaller than uncompressed .musicxml and is useful for exchanging editable scores between notation applications. It is not an audio format and cannot preserve the original recording as playable sound.

How to actually convert M4A to MXL

A reliable workflow has two stages: transcribe the audio into notes, then export those notes as compressed MusicXML.

1. Convert the M4A to WAV if the transcription program does not accept M4A. With FFmpeg, run ffmpeg -i recording.m4a -ar 44100 -ac 1 recording.wav. Keep the original M4A because converting to WAV does not recover information lost through AAC compression.
2. Transcribe the recording with an audio-to-MIDI tool. Basic Pitch can generate a MIDI file from monophonic or moderately polyphonic recordings; Melodyne and dedicated transcription applications can also export MIDI. Choose the correct instrument range and tempo where the software provides those settings.
3. Open the generated .mid file in MuseScore using File → Open. Select the correct instruments, MIDI channels, tempo, and quantization options during import.
4. Correct wrong pitches, note lengths, rests, tuplets, ties, beaming, key signatures, and time signatures in MuseScore. Audio transcription commonly produces extra notes and incorrect rhythm subdivisions, especially with chords, reverb, drums, or overlapping instruments.
5. Export the finished score with File → Export, choose Compressed MusicXML, and save it with an .mxl extension. Reopen the file in MuseScore or another MusicXML application to verify that all parts and notation elements survived.

Quality and compatibility limitations

The accuracy of the MXL depends primarily on the transcription stage. Clean, isolated, monophonic recordings generally produce better MIDI than full mixes containing vocals, sustained chords, percussion, effects, or background noise.

MIDI stores performance events rather than a finished visual score, so MuseScore must infer notation from note timing. Review the imported score before exporting, and test the final MXL in the application that will receive it because MusicXML support for page layout, playback data, lyrics, and notation details varies between programs.

If the goal is only to preserve or edit the recording, keep it as M4A or convert it to WAV; MXL is appropriate only when editable musical notation is required.
