A TIFF scan contains only pixels, while an MXL file contains structured musical notation. This conversion is needed when scanned sheet music must become editable in a notation program such as MuseScore, Dorico, or Finale; it requires optical music recognition rather than ordinary image export.

What the TIFF format is

TIFF, or Tagged Image File Format, is a raster image format commonly produced by scanners and archival document systems. Sheet-music scans are often stored as monochrome, grayscale, or color TIFF files because TIFF supports high resolution, lossless compression, and multi-page documents. Image editors such as Adobe Photoshop and GIMP can also create TIFF files, but they do not store notes, measures, clefs, or instrument parts as musical objects.

What the MXL format is

MXL is the compressed form of MusicXML, a notation interchange format used by MuseScore, Dorico, Finale, Sibelius, and other composition software. It stores semantic data such as pitches, durations, rests, voices, lyrics, articulations, key signatures, and layout information inside a ZIP-based package. Unlike a TIFF, an MXL score can be transposed, edited, played back, and exported to notation-ready PDF or audio.

How to actually convert TIFF to MXL

Because TIFF has no musical structure, use optical music recognition (OMR). Audiveris is a suitable desktop tool for turning scanned notation into MusicXML:

  1. Prepare a clear scan at about 300–600 dpi. Crop empty borders, straighten skewed pages, and separate pages if the TIFF contains an unsupported multi-page layout.
  2. Open the file in Audiveris with File → Open. For a multi-page score, add the pages to one book and keep them in reading order.
  3. Run recognition with Book → Transcribe book. Review the detected staves, measures, clefs, time signatures, key signatures, notes, tuplets, lyrics, and system breaks.
  4. Export the recognized score through Book → Export book. Select compressed MusicXML or an .mxl output if the installed Audiveris version provides that option.
  5. If Audiveris exports only uncompressed .xml, open that file in MuseScore and use File → Export, then choose compressed MusicXML or the .mxl extension.

You can also convert the file on 101convert.com for free without installing software, provided its TIFF-to-MXL workflow supports music recognition for the particular scan. Check the resulting score in a notation application rather than treating the generated file as a verified transcription.

Quality and compatibility limitations

Recognition accuracy depends on scan quality and engraving style. Handwritten notation, dense orchestral pages, multiple voices, cross-staff beaming, ornaments, guitar tablature, lyrics, and damaged pages commonly require manual correction. A TIFF that is merely a photograph cannot be converted into an accurate MXL by changing its extension or placing it in a ZIP archive.

After export, open the MXL in the target notation program and check rhythm totals, accidentals, ties, voices, repeats, pickups, lyrics, page breaks, and instrument assignments. MXL preserves musical semantics but may not preserve the original TIFF’s exact visual appearance; layout details can change between notation applications.
