What the SMF format is

SMF means Standard MIDI File, normally stored with the .mid or .midi extension. It stores musical events such as note pitches, durations, velocity, channel assignments, program changes, tempo, and controller data; it does not store engraved page notation or recorded audio.

Sequencers, digital audio workstations, notation programs, keyboards, and other MIDI hardware commonly create SMF files. Format 0 stores tracks together, while format 1 keeps separate synchronized tracks. SMF is well suited to playback and performance transfer, but a notation program must interpret its timing and performance events before producing a score.

What the MXL format is

MXL is the compressed form of MusicXML, an interchange format for editable musical notation. It can represent measures, clefs, key and time signatures, voices, lyrics, articulations, dynamics, parts, and other score structure for use in notation software.

An MXL file is a ZIP-compressed MusicXML package, usually much smaller than the equivalent uncompressed .musicxml or .xml file. It is useful when moving a score between applications such as MuseScore, Finale, Sibelius, Dorico, and other MusicXML-compatible programs.

How to convert SMF to MXL

Using MuseScore is the practical desktop method:

1. Open MuseScore and choose File → Open, then select the .mid or .midi file.
2. In the MIDI import dialog, review the detected tempo, instruments, tracks, quantization, and voices. Increase quantization precision when short notes are being merged, but avoid excessive precision that creates unnecessary rests and irregular values.
3. Open the imported score and correct measures, time signatures, note spelling, tuplets, voices, rests, and instrument assignments.
4. Choose File → Save As, select Compressed MusicXML (*.mxl) as the file type, and save the result.
5. Reopen the saved .mxl file in MuseScore or another MusicXML application to check that parts, layout, lyrics, and playback data survived the export.

Quality and compatibility limits

SMF describes performance timing, not the original composer’s notation decisions. The conversion may therefore lose or misinterpret beaming, enharmonic spelling, pickup measures, tied notes, tuplets, polyphonic voices, ornaments, pedal behavior, dynamics, and instrument names. MIDI velocity is not equivalent to explicitly engraved dynamics.

For the cleanest result, use a MIDI file with a defined tempo map, separate instrument tracks, consistent quantization, and minimal live-timing variation. MXL carries notation data rather than sound, so it cannot reproduce the original synthesizer samples or audio performance. Compatibility also varies: applications may ignore application-specific MusicXML extensions, layout settings, or unsupported notation elements.
