smf to mid file conversion
.smf and .mid usually refer to the same kind of file: a Standard MIDI File. In many cases, there is no real conversion needed at all. If the file already contains standard MIDI data, changing the extension from .smf to .mid may be enough.
Important: some programs use .smf as a custom extension for files that are not standard MIDI files. In that case, renaming the file will not make it playable as MIDI. You first need to confirm that the file is actually a standard MIDI file.
You can test this by opening the file in a MIDI-capable player, editor, or DAW. If it opens correctly, it is likely standard MIDI data and can usually be saved or exported as .mid.
MuseScore is one option for this. Open the file, then use File → Export and choose MIDI to save it as .mid. Depending on the version, you may also be able to use File → Save As or an export dialog that offers MIDI output.
Other tools that can open and save MIDI files include DAWs, MIDI editors, and some audio conversion tools. Examples include Reaper, Cakewalk, FL Studio, and Aria Maestosa, provided they support importing the source file and exporting standard MIDI.
If the file is already valid MIDI, the simplest fix is often just renaming .smf to .mid. If the file is not valid MIDI, you need software that can read its original format and export standard MIDI data.
Tip: If you are unsure, make a copy of the file before renaming it so you can restore the original extension if needed.
