Understanding SDS and MID file formats
Before we delve into the conversion process, it's important to understand what these file formats are. SDS (Sample Dump Standard) is a standard file format used for transferring samples of digital audio sound to another device. It's commonly used in MIDI devices.
On the other hand, MID (Musical Instrument Digital Interface) is a music file format that connects musical instruments to computers. Unlike regular audio files like MP3s or WAVs, MID files don't contain actual audio data and are therefore much smaller in size. Instead, they contain data on what notes are played, how long each note is held, and other information that a synthesizer or other sound generator uses to create music.
Converting SDS to MID
Converting SDS files to MID format can be a bit tricky because they are fundamentally different. SDS files contain actual audio data, while MID files contain instructions for creating audio. However, it's not impossible. The best software to do this is Akai Disk Utils.
To convert SDS to MID with Akai Disk Utils, follow these steps:
- Open Akai Disk Utils.
- Go to File → Open and select the SDS file you want to convert.
- After opening the file, go to File → Export → MID.
- Choose the destination folder and save the file.
Please note that the resulting MID file will not contain any audio data. Instead, it will contain instructions that a MIDI device can use to recreate the original audio.
