What the SMF format is

In music composition, SMF means Standard MIDI File. It contains tracks, note-on and note-off events, timing information, tempo changes, controller data, program changes, lyrics, and other MIDI messages; it does not contain recorded audio or a finished visual page layout.

Sequencers, digital audio workstations, notation programs, hardware keyboards, and drum machines create SMF files. The usual extensions are .mid and .midi; some applications use .smf. Type 0 files store all channels in one track, while Type 1 files separate material into multiple synchronized tracks.

What the PNG format is

PNG is a lossless raster image format suited to rendered sheet music, title pages, notation excerpts, and web previews. It preserves sharp black notation, supports transparent backgrounds, and avoids the compression artifacts produced by JPEG.

A PNG contains pixels rather than musical structure. It cannot be played, edited as MIDI, or reliably converted back into the original tracks, timing, controllers, and instrument assignments.

How to actually convert SMF to PNG

Using MuseScore on a computer

1. Make a copy of the original file. If MuseScore does not recognize the .smf extension, rename the copy to composition.mid; this changes only the filename extension, not the MIDI data.
2. Open MuseScore and choose File → Open, then select the SMF or renamed MIDI file.
3. In the MIDI import dialog, set the quantization value and choose which tracks to import. Enable options for separate instruments or staves when needed.
4. Inspect the imported score. MIDI usually lacks reliable beaming, enharmonic spelling, key signatures, time signatures, and notation voices, so correct these items in MuseScore before exporting.
5. Choose File → Export, select PNG as the format, choose the page range and output folder, and export. MuseScore normally creates one PNG per score page.

For a command-line workflow, MuseScore can open the MIDI file and export a score format, but the graphical import settings are usually needed first. After saving a corrected MuseScore file, use mscore -o score.png score.mscz where supported by the installed MuseScore version; command-line options differ between MuseScore releases.

Using the built-in online converter

You can use the free converter on 101convert.com without installing software: upload the .smf file, choose PNG as the target format, start the conversion, and download the generated image. If the service does not accept the .smf extension, make a copy with a .mid extension first; the file must still contain valid Standard MIDI data.

Quality and compatibility limits

SMF-to-PNG conversion is an interpretation step, not a direct format rewrite. MIDI records timing and playback instructions, whereas notation requires decisions about rhythm grouping, rests, voices, tuplets, clefs, accidentals, and page layout. A dense or human-played MIDI file may produce unreadable notation until quantization and cleanup are applied.

PNG resolution affects printing quality. Use a sufficiently high export resolution or print-size setting, and inspect thin staff lines and small text at the intended physical size. Exporting several pages produces separate image files rather than a multipage PNG document; combine them into a PDF if a single printable document is required.
