KAR files are karaoke MIDI files, while PNG is a bitmap image, so this conversion is used when sheet music or lyrics must be shared as a static image. A notation program such as MuseScore must first interpret the MIDI data and render it; there is no direct audio-to-image conversion.
What the KAR format is
KAR is a karaoke file format based on MIDI. It stores musical events such as notes, timing, tempo, instruments, and usually synchronized song lyrics in MIDI text or lyric events. Karaoke authoring programs, MIDI sequencers, and karaoke software create or save .kar files. You typically encounter them in karaoke collections or when importing a song into software that supports MIDI and lyric tracks.
A KAR file does not contain a page layout or a finished picture. Its notes must be arranged into notation before they can be rendered as an image.
What the PNG format is
PNG is a lossless raster image format that supports transparency and sharp rendering of text, musical symbols, and line art. It is suitable for sharing a single music-notation page, embedding a score in a document, or preserving a rendered preview without requiring the original notation software.
PNG does not retain editable notes, MIDI timing, instruments, or synchronized karaoke behavior. The exported image represents only the visual notation selected during export.
How to convert KAR to PNG
Using MuseScore
- Install and open MuseScore, then choose File → Open and select the
.karfile. - If MuseScore does not recognize the extension, make a copy of the file and rename the copy from
song.kartosong.mid. This changes only the filename extension; the MIDI data remains unchanged. Open the renamed copy. - Review the MIDI import settings. Select the tracks to include, enable lyric import if the option is available, and set the quantization or note-value settings so that the generated notation is readable.
- Correct the layout as needed: remove empty tracks, adjust page breaks, change the paper size, and edit incorrectly interpreted notes or lyrics.
- Choose File → Export, select
PNGas the format, choose the required pages and resolution if those options are shown, and save the exported image.
MuseScore normally creates one PNG image per score page. For a multi-page work, keep the exported files together or combine them into a PDF afterward if a single document is required.
Using the online converter
You can convert the file on the 101convert.com website for free without installing software. Because a KAR file contains musical instructions rather than a pre-rendered picture, the service must generate a notation image, and the result may differ from a manually formatted MuseScore score.
Quality and compatibility limits
KAR files are not standardized as strictly as ordinary MIDI files. Some store lyrics in nonstandard metadata, use unusual timing, or contain tracks that notation software cannot identify correctly. A successful import may therefore require manual correction of rhythms, voices, key signatures, lyrics, or track assignments.
PNG export cannot preserve karaoke playback, lyric synchronization, MIDI instruments, or editable notation. Use the original KAR file for playback and archive it alongside the PNG; use a notation-native format such as .mscz if the rendered score will need further editing.
