What the KAR format is
KAR is a karaoke variant of Standard MIDI File. It stores note events, tempo, instrument assignments, control data, and usually lyrics or other timed text; it does not contain a singer’s voice or an audio recording. Karaoke authoring programs and MIDI sequencers create KAR files, and karaoke players such as vanBasco’s Karaoke Player commonly open them.
The file’s sound depends on the synthesizer, MIDI sound bank, channel settings, and effects used for playback. Two programs can therefore produce different audio from the same KAR file.
What the WAV format is
WAV is an audio container most often used for uncompressed PCM audio. It is suitable for audio editing, DAWs, video production, CD-quality exports, and applications that cannot play MIDI or KAR.
WAV preserves the rendered waveform without lossy compression, but the files are much larger than compressed formats. A practical default is 44.1 kHz, 16-bit PCM stereo; use 48 kHz for video projects or 24-bit when the subsequent production workflow requires extra headroom.
How to actually convert KAR to WAV
Using MuseScore
- Install MuseScore and ensure a usable SoundFont is selected in Edit → Preferences → I/O or the corresponding audio settings on your operating system.
- Open the file with File → Open and select
song.kar. MuseScore imports the MIDI notes and normally retains the lyric events as imported text. - Check the tempo, instruments, channel mute states, and playback result. Change instruments or the SoundFont if the arrangement sounds incorrect.
- Choose File → Export, select WAV as the format, set the sample rate and bit depth, and save the result as
song.wav.
Using FluidSynth from the command line
FluidSynth renders MIDI events through a SoundFont and is useful for repeatable batch conversion. Install FluidSynth and obtain a compatible General MIDI SoundFont, then run:
fluidsynth -ni /path/to/GeneralUser.sf2 song.kar -F song.wav -r 44100
The SoundFont determines the instruments, so include the same SoundFont whenever you need reproducible output. If the KAR file is rejected because of its extension, make a copy named song.mid and run the command on that copy; KAR is MIDI data with karaoke metadata, and changing the extension does not change its contents.
Using the online converter
You can convert the file for free on the 101convert.com website without installing software. The resulting WAV still depends on how the service synthesizes the MIDI data and may not match the sound produced by your karaoke player.
Quality and compatibility limitations
This conversion is a rendering process, not extraction of existing audio: the KAR file has no embedded vocal track to recover. Lyrics may remain available in the imported project, but they are not spoken or sung in the WAV unless the source file already uses recorded audio through a separate workflow.
To avoid clipping, inspect the rendered WAV and reduce the master level before exporting if several MIDI channels peak at 0 dBFS. Verify loop points, tempo changes, pitch-bend data, and percussion mapping, because different synthesizers can interpret MIDI settings differently.
