Free online GP4 to WAV converter

Convert a GP4 file when a player, audio editor, DAW, or hardware device cannot open Guitar Pro notation and requires an audio file. The result is a rendered performance in WAV, not a recovery of any original recording.

What the GP4 format is

.gp4 is Guitar Pro 4's project format, created by Arobas Music. It stores tablature, standard notation, tempo, time signatures, lyrics, instrument assignments, effects, repeats, and other score data; it normally contains no recorded audio.

Guitar Pro 4 and newer Guitar Pro releases can open GP4 files, although newer releases may interpret legacy effects or playback settings differently. TuxGuitar can open many GP4 files. The format is common in downloaded guitar tabs, band arrangements, lesson files, and older personal scores.

What the WAV format is

.wav is a RIFF-based audio container commonly used for uncompressed PCM audio. Audio editors, DAWs, media players, samplers, and many hardware devices support it.

PCM WAV preserves the rendered samples without lossy compression, making it suitable for editing, mixing, and archiving. The trade-off is size: stereo 44.1 kHz, 16-bit PCM uses approximately 10 MB per minute. WAV does not preserve the editable notes, tracks, or notation in the GP4 project.

How to convert GP4 to WAV

Direct export from a current Guitar Pro version

1. Open the GP4 file in a compatible Guitar Pro release.
2. Check the score, tempo, repeats, track mutes, instrument sounds, and playback settings.
3. Use File → Export and select an audio option such as WAV, if the installed Guitar Pro version provides it.
4. Choose the output location and available sample-rate or quality settings, then export the file.

Audio export is available in some newer Guitar Pro releases, but the exact menu and supported formats vary by version. The original Guitar Pro 4 application should not be assumed to provide direct WAV export; if it offers only MIDI export, use the workflow below.

Export MIDI, then render it

1. Open the GP4 file in Guitar Pro or TuxGuitar.
2. Verify playback, then choose File → Export → MIDI and save a file such as song.mid. MIDI contains note, timing, controller, and program-change instructions, not audio.
3. Open song.mid in a MIDI-capable program such as MuseScore, or render it with a MIDI synthesizer such as FluidSynth.
4. In MuseScore, check the imported tracks, tempo, instruments, repeats, and note durations, then use File → Export, choose WAV, set the available sample rate and bit depth, and save song.wav.

MuseScore's sound depends on its installed soundfont. A General MIDI soundfont provides compatibility, while a different soundfont or synthesizer may produce more suitable guitar, bass, keyboard, or drum sounds.

Render with FluidSynth

1. Install FluidSynth and obtain a General MIDI SoundFont in .sf2 format from a lawful source.
2. Export the GP4 score to song.mid with Guitar Pro or TuxGuitar.
3. Run:

fluidsynth -ni soundfont.sf2 song.mid -F song.wav -r 44100

Replace soundfont.sf2 with the actual SoundFont path. The SoundFont determines the synthesized instruments; -r 44100 sets a 44.1 kHz output rate. FluidSynth's exact command-line options can vary slightly by release.

Use the built-in online converter

You can upload the GP4 file to 101convert.com, choose WAV, and download the rendered file without installing software. The service synthesizes the notation, so its instrument sounds, repeat handling, and articulation support may differ from Guitar Pro. Do not upload confidential or unreleased scores unless the service's handling policy is acceptable.

Quality and compatibility limitations

This is a rendering process, not a direct codec conversion. A GP4 file generally describes how a performance should be played; it does not recreate the sound of a real guitarist, amplifier, effects chain, or original recording.

Bends, slides, palm muting, harmonics, vibrato, grace notes, articulations, drum mappings, repeats, tuplets, and program changes may be simplified or interpreted differently during MIDI export and synthesis. Listen to the complete WAV and check for missing tracks, incorrect instruments, silent sections, clipped peaks, and wrong repeat behavior.

Use 44.1 or 48 kHz and 24-bit WAV for further production when supported. Use 16-bit WAV for broad compatibility or smaller files. Keep the original GP4 and MIDI files: WAV can be edited as audio, but it cannot restore the score's individual notes, notation, or instrument controls.
