Free online GP4 to MIDI converter

A DAW, keyboard, sequencer, or notation program may require MIDI instead of a Guitar Pro project file. Converting the file makes its note and timing data available for playback, editing, and arrangement in MIDI-compatible software.

What the GP4 format is

GP4 is the proprietary Guitar Pro 4 tablature and notation format developed by Arobas Music. It stores guitar and bass tablature, standard notation, rhythm, tempo, tuning, instruments, effects, lyrics, and multi-track song structure. Guitar Pro 4 creates GP4 files; compatible later Guitar Pro releases and TuxGuitar can often open them.

What the MIDI format is

MIDI stores musical performance instructions rather than recorded sound. A MIDI file can contain note pitches, timing, durations, velocities, tempo changes, program changes, controller events, and track or channel assignments. DAWs, sequencers, synthesizers, keyboards, drum machines, and many notation programs support MIDI, and MIDI files are normally much smaller than audio files.

How to convert GP4 to MIDI

Guitar Pro provides the most direct conversion:

1. Open the .gp4 file in Guitar Pro 4 or a compatible later version.
2. Check the tracks, tempo, tuning, repeats, alternate endings, and any required articulations before exporting.
3. Choose File → Export → MIDI. Menu wording can vary between Guitar Pro versions.
4. Select a destination and save the result as .mid or .midi.
5. Open the MIDI in the target DAW or sequencer and assign suitable instrument sounds if the exported program numbers do not produce the desired patches.

TuxGuitar is a desktop alternative that can open many GP4 files and export MIDI:

1. Open the file with File → Open.
2. Check the imported tracks and playback settings.
3. Use File → Export → MIDI and save the output, preferably with a .mid extension.
4. Test the MIDI in the destination application, especially around repeats and tempo changes.

Quality and compatibility limitations

MIDI export transfers musical events, not the original Guitar Pro display. Tablature layout, page formatting, fingering positions, and most notation appearance are not retained. Lyrics and other metadata may also be omitted or transferred differently depending on the exporter.

Guitar techniques such as bends, slides, harmonics, grace notes, tremolo, and palm muting may be represented with pitch-bend, controller, or additional note events. The receiving software may interpret those events differently, and its instrument sounds will not match Guitar Pro's playback automatically.

Repeat signs and alternate endings can be expanded, omitted, or interpreted differently during export. Inspect the MIDI around repeat markers, pickup measures, tempo changes, and time-signature changes. MIDI channel assignments and program numbers are not consistent sound identifiers across devices, so patches often need manual reassignment.

Keep the original .gp4 file when editable tablature, notation, layout, or Guitar Pro-specific effects must remain available.
