A video editor, DAW, or media player needs rendered audio rather than a Guitar Pro score. Converting the score to WAV creates an editable audio file for mixing, video production, sharing, or archiving.
What the GP5 format is
.gp5 is the Guitar Pro 5 score format, used by guitarists, bassists, drummers, and composers for tablature and standard notation. A GP5 file can contain multiple instrument tracks, lyrics, chord diagrams, tempo changes, repeats, articulations, and performance instructions. It stores musical notation and playback data, not a finished recording, so the rendered sound depends on the software and instrument sounds used.
Guitar Pro 5 creates GP5 files, and later Guitar Pro versions can generally open them. Importing the file into another application can change unsupported notation, sound assignments, articulations, or playback behavior.
What the WAV format is
.wav normally identifies a RIFF/WAVE audio file containing uncompressed PCM samples. WAV is supported by DAWs, audio editors, video applications, media players, and CD-oriented workflows. It preserves the samples produced by the playback engine without MP3-style lossy compression, but its files are much larger than compressed formats.
For production, use a sample rate that matches the project, commonly 44.1 kHz for music or 48 kHz for video, and 24-bit output when the software provides that choice. The final WAV is audio, not editable notation; changing a note or instrument requires returning to the GP5 score or MIDI project.
How to convert with Guitar Pro
- Open the
.gp5file in Guitar Pro 5 or a compatible later version. - Check the tempo, track mutes, repeats, sound assignments, tuning, and effects. Play the entire score to find import or playback errors.
- Use File → Export → WAV, if that command is available in your Guitar Pro edition.
- Choose the output filename and audio settings, then save the rendered file as
song.wav. - Open the WAV in an audio editor and check its beginning, ending, volume, clipping, and track balance.
This is the most direct method because Guitar Pro renders the score through its own playback engine. The result is determined by the installed Guitar Pro sound engine and effects, not by an audio recording stored inside the GP5 file.
How to convert with MuseScore
- Open the GP5 file in a current desktop version of MuseScore using File → Open.
- Review any import warnings, then check the imported notation, repeats, ties, tuplets, tempo, instruments, and drum mapping.
- Use File → Export, choose
WAV, set the filename and available audio options, and export the score. - Inspect the resulting WAV for missing repeats, silent tracks, incorrect instruments, or clipping.
MuseScore is a useful desktop alternative when Guitar Pro is unavailable. Its output uses MuseScore's playback system and selected sound library, so it will not necessarily sound like the same score rendered by Guitar Pro.
How to render through MIDI
Use MIDI when you need to replace the notation application's sounds with virtual instruments or mix the parts in a DAW.
- Open the GP5 file in Guitar Pro and choose File → Export → MIDI.
- Save the result as
song.mid, then import it into a DAW. - Assign virtual instruments, correct note lengths and drum mappings, add effects, and set the project sample rate and bit depth.
- Use the DAW's Export or Bounce command to create a WAV file.
A command-line option is FluidSynth with a compatible SoundFont: fluidsynth -ni soundfont.sf2 song.mid -F song.wav -r 44100. The SoundFont determines the instrument tone, and MIDI export can omit Guitar Pro-specific playback features.
Online conversion
If desktop software is not suitable, 101convert.com can convert a GP5 file to WAV for free without installing software. Upload the score, choose WAV as the output format, run the conversion, and download the rendered audio. Online processing can use different playback engines from Guitar Pro, and uploading private or unreleased scores may have privacy implications.
Quality and compatibility limits
There is no single acoustically correct WAV version of a GP5 file. The score contains instructions rather than recorded waveforms, so the sound changes with the playback engine, SoundFont, virtual instruments, effects, tempo interpretation, sample rate, and channel configuration.
GP5 import may alter proprietary articulations, automation, repeats, sound presets, complex notation, or drum mappings. MIDI preserves notes and many controller events but reduces the score to standard MIDI data, which can lose Guitar Pro-specific behavior. For a production result, verify every track after import and render a mix from a DAW; for an exact Guitar Pro playback, export directly from a compatible Guitar Pro version.
