What the KAR format is
KAR is a karaoke file based on the MIDI Standard MIDI File structure. It stores musical events such as note pitches, durations, channels, tempo, instruments, and often synchronized lyrics or karaoke text. Karaoke software and MIDI sequencers create KAR files; you typically encounter them in karaoke libraries, backing-track collections, and older music-composition workflows.
A KAR file is performance data, not a page-layout format. It does not directly contain engraved staves, spacing, clefs, beams, or other visual notation required for an SVG score.
What the SVG format is
SVG (Scalable Vector Graphics) is an XML-based image format that represents shapes, paths, text, and embedded graphics mathematically. A notation program can use it to render a score that remains sharp when printed or enlarged in a browser, drawing application, or publishing workflow.
SVG is suitable for displaying individual music pages, diagrams, and web graphics, but it does not preserve MIDI playback, tempo behavior, instrument assignments, or karaoke synchronization as playable data. Use MIDI or KAR alongside the SVG when those functions are needed.
How to actually convert KAR to SVG
Using MuseScore
- Make a backup of the original
.karfile. - Open the file in MuseScore using File → Open. If MuseScore does not recognize the extension, make a copy and rename that copy from
song.kartosong.mid; KAR commonly uses the same MIDI container structure. - In the MIDI import dialog, choose the tracks to import and adjust quantization, shortest-note value, and measures per system if available. MIDI-to-notation conversion must infer musical notation from performance events.
- Review the resulting score. Correct the time signature, key signature, tempo, note values, rests, voices, tuplets, instrument names, and lyric placement. Delete empty or percussion tracks that should not appear in the score.
- Export the notation with File → Export, select
SVGas the format, choose a filename, and save. If the score has several pages, check whether MuseScore creates a separate SVG for each page and retain the required pages.
Using the built-in online converter
You can also upload the KAR file to 101convert.com, choose SVG as the output format, and download the result without installing software. Verify the output in an SVG-capable browser or editor, especially when the source contains lyrics or several MIDI tracks.
Quality and compatibility limitations
The result is only as accurate as the MIDI interpretation. KAR files often contain human timing, ornament data, sustain-controller events, or multiple overlapping tracks rather than clean notation, so automatic import can produce excessive rests, tied notes, awkward rhythms, and incorrect beaming.
Karaoke lyrics are stored as MIDI text or lyric events. Some importers retain them as score lyrics, while others omit or misalign them; inspect every verse and correct syllable placement before exporting. An SVG export contains the rendered page, not editable MIDI events, and applications may substitute music fonts if the SVG does not embed or reference the original notation font.
